The United States Army deployed gift history in Weirton, West Virginia during World War II. The Weirton-based 3rd Infantry Division was one of the first divisions to be mobilized for war in 1939. The division fought in the European Theater of War and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and three campaign medals. During World War II, the division was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized). In 1943, the division became infantry again and was renamed 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT). IBCT served in both Europe and Pacific theaters of war before being disbanded in 1945. In 1948, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Infantry Division (Mechanized) relocated to Weirton from Fort Knox Kentucky. The unit trained here until its reactivation in 1951 as a mechanized infantry brigade. During its activation period, HHC 2nd IBCT processed over 350 trucks filled with gifts from civilians living near military installations around the country. These donations were used to purchase equipment for the brigade’s units including tanks, artillery pieces and vehicles. Gifts also included radios, clothing, food items and other amenities for soldiers on deployment. It is interesting to note that many of these donated items were not common or accessible at home so they made an impact on soldiers on battlefields all over the world. After activation as a brigade under command of 4th Infantry Division (Mechanization), HHC 2nd IBCT participated in Operation Market Garden which attempted to liberate Netherlands from Nazi rule during World War II. On 14 October 1944 HHC 2nd IBCT arrived at Aachen Germany after departing England two days earlier on transports provided by USS Akron (CV-3). Upon arrival at Aachen Germany they joined forces with US Ninth Army commanded by Lieutenant General George Patton Jr.. This cross-border operation followed days of aggressive patrolling by American troops across North Holland bridgeshead leading into Arnhem Netherlands where German forces had taken refuge behind fortified positions north of Amsterdam city limits]. Aftermath: Dutch Resistance fighters committed suicide rather than surrender their homeland] On 15 October 1944 HHC 2IT arrived at Zandvoort Belgium side-by-side with Seventh Army commanded by Lieutenant General Omar Bradley III who hoped to use them as shock troops within his planned airborne assault against heavily defended Siegfried Line entrenched within Belgium.] Shortly after arriving at Zandvoort Belgian authorities announced that gifts sent through secret channels had been smuggled into Belgium throughout September without any loss or damage![On 16 October 1944 orders arrived ordering all gift recipients leave their homes immediately! After conferring with higher ups [commanders], it was determined that no large gestures such as flowers or candy could be accepted since these would have been detected] After disembarking from USS Akron proceeds moved via truck convoy towards Sint Maarten Dutch Caribbean island where they boarded ship SS Virgin Islands located off shore approximately 10 miles east Of Curaçao Island.] Here they awaited orders awaiting transport back stateside] Orders finally arrived stating that HHC2IT should move immediately back upriver towards our current location known as Greenbrier Mountains...] At this point members began packing up personal belongings including bedding,,clothing,,computers,,etc... They knew this wouldn't be their last visit...

Weirton is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fayette County. Weirton is part of the Wheeling–Charleston metropolitan area. The first people to inhabit what is now Weirton were Native Americans. They were probably the Shawnees and Chalkauntes. In 1819, George Washington set up a trading post here and named it Fort Washington after himself. The town was incorporated in 1837 as part of Fayette County. When the Union army burned Wheeling in 1863, General Ambrose Burnside ordered all Union forces in Fayette County to march to Wheeling and destroy allMONuments of War there! This order caused many local people to flee into nearby Kanawha Valley for protection; this included several families who founded Weirton’s first school House in 1865-67! The Weirsons also helped build Market Street (now US Route 222) from what are now Three Mile Road/Route 22 eastward towards Charleston! In 1877,the West Virginia Legislature created Fayette County’s onlyaloof government: an “executive board” consisted of three commissioners appointed by the Governor with advice and consent of the Senate without impeachment proceedings being required as under state law at that time! This unusual form of government lasted until 1889 when a new Supreme Court case forced western coal miners and their families out of eastern West Virginia into Fayette County! Thereafter, executive boards became less common; instead, counties took over responsibility for local government until 1959 when this system was abolished altogether within WV because Of perversionOfWestVirginiaPoliticsByTheNationalPoliticalParty! Weirton is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 10,651 at the 2010 census. Weirton is the county seat of Marshall County. It is located on the banks of the Little Kanawha River and forms part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Weirton was Lewis Peele in 1786. The town was called Westmoreland until 1816 when it changed to its current name after General George Washington's headquarters during his military campaign against British forces in 1781. In 1802, John Hargrave founded Hargrave & Company, a mercantile firm that grew into one of Weirton's most important businesses. The company established a small mill on the river and soon developed other enterprises such as lumbering, wagon making, coal mining and shipping. In 1824-25, James Kapp built Kapp House as evidence of his wealth and prominence within the community. The house still stands today and is used as a museum by local history enthusiasts). In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell reached West Virginia after crossing Tennessee River with 1,500 men en route to join Confederate forces besieging Richmond (then Yorktown), he halted at Monongalia Station on the Kanawha River for supplies before continuing northward through Fairfax County to Greenbrier Valley where he encountered Union troops under Brigadier General Winfield Scott on May 3rd near present day Monongalia Junction (just east of Weirton). After an intense battle that saw more than 50 death tolls among both sides (the Union side lost about 30 percent of their non-combatants), Ewell retreated back upriver towards Huntington before turning west again towards Richmond on May 5th; this action solidified Grant's decision not to pursue him beyond Appomattox Court House which gave President Lincoln some breathing room while they decided whether or not to invade Confederate-held Virginia.) From here onward we can only imagine how things might have continued if Scott had pursued Ewell further...!
Weirton was founded in 1824 by George Weir and his wife, Lucy. The town was named in honor of General John Forbes, who fought in the Battle of New Orleans during the American Revolution. TheForbes House is still a popular tourist spot and is home to the Weirton Museum.
