The United States Air Force has been providing military and police forces with air support since 1941. The first USAF air service was organized in April of that year when President Franklin D. Roosevelt activated the American Volunteer Group (AVG). This organization provided training for Bomber Command crews and flew bomber missions over Nazi Germany during World War II. In 1947, the USAF was created as a separate branch of the military with headquarters at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. At Offutt AFB, flying squadrons were assigned to wing commands which were responsible for operational airspace within their wings.
