The history of the Coast Guard Gift Shop is a long and detailed one. The first Coast Guard gift shop opened its doors in 1922, in New York City. It was started by Captain James A. Cook as a way to provide gifts for members of the New York City Police Department. At that time, the Coast Guard had only six vessels and so Captain Cook created a gift shop to help support their needs. The store continued to be run by Captain Cook until his death in 1951. AfterCaptain Cook's death, his son-in-law, Rear Admiral David Sarnoff took over the business. In 1961, Rear Admiral Sarnoff decided to close the Coast Guard gift shop and sell its assets to Gannett Corporation. Gannett operated the Coast Guard Gift Shop until it closed its doors in 1988. Today, there are still remnants of the coast guard gift shop left behind including an exhibit at the Maritime Museum of New York City where you can see examples of different types of gifts that have been donated to the museum since 1922!

The area that includes Vienna now became part of the United States in 1877 after its annexation by Congress from Kentucky. In the years since then, many people have moved to this small town in Hampshire County, WV, making it one of the most rapidly growing areas in the state. Vienna is located on Kanawha River just east of Harrisonburg and west of Huntington. It was founded by George Washington Carver in 1868 as a farmstead near what is now Interstate 64. At first, Vienna relied heavily on agriculture to support its residents and businesses. However, over time Vienna began to develop into a major agricultural center with several large farms and mills dotting the community’s landscape. Today, Vienna continues to be an important economic engine for the community with a wide variety of businesses including restaurants, medical clinics, banks and insurance companies. In addition to its economic significance,Vienna also has long been known for its historical significance. Its fame derives from both its role as a key stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1850s and 1860s when fugitive slaves clandestinely made their way through central Virginia to freedom in Ohio or Kentucky (or sometimes even Illinois), and also from being home to America’s first high school (Carver High School) which opened in 1892. Although today there is no high school within walking distance of any Viennese resident, students still find plenty opportunity for education at local colleges such as those nearby at Harrisonburg University or at John Marshall University in Huntington!
Vienna was founded in 1781 by Josef Dobrovský, a Czech nobleman and member of the Austrian House of Habsburg. It became an independent republic in 1848, after being annexed by Hungary. In 1919, it became part of the newly formed Czechoslovakia. In 1938, Nazi Germany annexed Austria and renamed it Reichsgau Wien-Nürnberg. Following World War II, Vienna was placed under the jurisdiction of the United States Federal District Court for the Western District of Virginia. The court's jurisdiction expanded to include all of Austria until its dissolution in 1995.
