St. Albans, West Virginia is a town located in Mingo County, West Virginia. The population was 3,839 at the 2010 census. It has been home to settlers since the 17th century and was originally called "New Albany" after New Albany, Indiana. The town was chartered in 1847. In 1861, when the United States became a nation, St. Albans became part of what is now Mingo County. The name for the community came from Saint Alban's Chapel which had been built in 1798 by missionary John Copley as a place of worship for Native Americans who were living near Charleston on the Ohio River. The first post office in St. Albans opened on October 8, 1847; it closed on September 26 of that year due to lack of mail volume. The first settler to live in St. Albans was George Witherspoon who arrived with his family in 1849 and started a farm west of town on High Street known as "Witherspoon's Land." By 1861, there were over 100 residents living in St. Albans including many farmers and mechanics who worked at local mills such as those operated by Eli Whitney and James Guthrie Sr.. When Mingo County was divided into three parts (the eastern part went to McDowell County while Winchester and Greenbrier counties formed an independent league) on November 15, 1861, St. Alban remained within Mingo County until January 1st 1865 when all three counties were combined under one administration system with its own sheriff and court system- this created problems for the small community because there wasn't enough space for everyone to live without creating social unrest In 1886 the Methodist Episcopal Church moved from downtown Stalbridge parallel to High Street where it had been founded in 1876 to make way for new construction projects associated with Third World gold rush fever throughout central Appalachia including several large schools and churches being built near Rushmore Lake; these projects increased traffic along High Street which led to more businesses opening up along Fayetteville Road including two whiskey distilleries (Peoples Distillery & North Bridge Brewery) One result of this growth was increased competition among merchants which led some entrepreneurs to open their own stores downtown instead of renting space from larger businesses or starting their own grocery stores In 1925 an unsuccessful effort by the West Virginia Legislature to get statehood resulted in most residents voting against statehood although some did move away during that time The population peaked at 4,500 around 1960 but gradually declined until peaking again at 3,839 at the 2000 census
