The first store on Main Street in St. Albans was opened in 1825 by John Aiken Jr., who was also the founder of nearby Harpers Ferry. In 1838, Hiram Bingham opened his own store on Third Avenue in town which became one of the most important commercial centers in the area. Over time, other stores cropped up and people started using different methods to brew their own coffee including immersion water heating, boiling water, and even stovetop brewing.
St. Albans is a small town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,786 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Armstrong County and one of the fastest-growing communities in Appalachia. The town was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1828 as an agricultural settlement on what is now the east side of main street in present-day St. Albans. The name "Albany" was given to it by General John Custer during his Indian Wars campaign against the Sioux Nation and their allies, meaning "the capital." In 1831, after years of development and growth, St. Albans became a separate city with its own government and school system. The first post office opened in 1833. In 1840, St. Albans incorporated as a First Amendment Town under state law designed to promote religious free speech rights for independent towns within Armstrong County (at that time part of Kentucky). That year also saw the opening of what is today Turney Stadium – home to both football and soccer teams – which served as centerpiece of local civic life until becoming too large for single use in 1957 and being torn down two years later to make way for a new high school & community center complex that still stands today (it replaced Alumni Hall which burned down in 1951). A number of industrious entrepreneurs began developing the township's mineral resources early on such as Ayer Manufacturing Company founder James Ayer who built a flour mill here; Ewing Coal mine owner James Ferguson; Worthy Paperworks founder Isaac Newton Wiley II; lumberman George Stephenson III; several contributing factors to Armstrong County's rapid economic growth during this period include numerous farmers who grew corn, wheat, beet sugar cane and other crops along with manufacturing businesses such as cooperatives like Armour Meat Packers & Packing Company (founded 1865) and Jardine Gear Works (founded 1870). A major transportation artery through downtown St. Alban was Center Street until it was Cutoff Road when US 30 replaced it circa 1925 due largely to then-Governor Nelson Rockefeller's largesse following his construction program called " Gateway Project". Today most people refer to Main Street/Route 2E simply as "Street".

In 1862, when the American Civil War began, St. Albans sided with the Union side and lost its status as a town within the Confederacy. However, the town continued to function as a military garrison until 1865 when it became a separate county within West Virginia. In 1971, St. Albans merged with neighboring Harrisonburg to form the current city of Harrisonburg. Today, St. Albans is known for its historical attirance including its churches and museums which are open to the public every day from 9am to 5pm. In 1792, St. Albans was the capital of West Virginia and one of the first U.S. states to be formed from the western part of Virginia. It was founded by Virginians James Robertson and John McIntosh as a town on the Monongahela River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Charleston. The initial population was about 50 people, but it grew rapidly because of its position as the gateway to what is now southern West Virginia and its access to goods brought up the river by wagon train travelers.
