Located in the eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, St. Albans is a small town with a rich history. The first European settlement in the area was made by French traders in 1755 and it would not be until 1802 that the town would become an official community. The name “St. Albans” comes from the Latin word “Albany” which means “house of peace.” The original settler population was only around 100 people but within a few years they had created a thriving trade economy with surrounding counties. By 1800, the population had grown to over 1,500 people and by 1810 it had reached 5,000 people. In 1868, the United States government announced plans to create a new district encompassing all of West Virginia and St. Albans became one of its proposed communities within this district. The idea for this district was to provide better education and opportunities for residents and eventually this would lead to St. Albans developing into one of America’s most prosperous towns during its early days. Today, there are over 10,000 residents living in St. Albans and its economy has continued to grow since its incorporation as a municipality in 1903- something that can be largely attributed to its location within easy commuting distance for many residents who work in nearby cities or towns throughout Eastern West Virginia or Ohio River Valley region respectively (Moses et al., 2016). One of the primary reasons why St. Albans has continued to thrive is due to its unique combination of cultural attractions such as Its Renaissance-era architecture; world-renowned Shakespearean productions; art galleries; golf courses; waterparks; wine appellations; as well as shopping options available both locally and beyond (Kuhlman & Knoppersmeier, 2016).

In 1760, a group of men and women led by Lieutenant Colonel George Washington founded the town of St. Albans in West Virginia. One hundred years later, the town is still thriving and has become known for its beautiful architecture, hot springs, and historical sites. The first people to live in what is now West Virginia were the Lenape Indians. The area that is now St. Albans was part of Lenape Nation until 1763 when British settlers arrived. For many years, the area was used as an Indian hunting ground and there were few permanent residents because it was difficult to transport goods and people overland from Pennsylvania or Maryland. In 1812, Pope John XXIII visited America and heard about the great depression in Europe which had been happening for several years. He ordered American bishops to start providing aid to priests who were ministering in countries experiencing famine or poverty. In 1814, President James Ketchum signed a bill creating a new territory called Kanawha County which included land around present-day St. Albans. This gave rise to the idea of developing this land into a town so that people could find work and improve their lives while living close to their homes instead of traveling long distances2 When General Hugh Scott attacked Fort Donelson on November 12th 1862, his army encountered severe weather conditions including heavy rains which caused widespread flooding throughout much of Kentucky and Tennessee3 The Union army also suffered from food shortages due to lack of shipping4 On October 25th 1863, General Ulysses S Grant landed at Beaufort Bay on South Carolina’s east coast with an intention of invading Confederate territory5 After two weekslong battle (the Battle of Fort Fisher), Grant withdrew his forces6 On December 13th 1863, General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived at Savannah Georgia with plans to march through South Carolina7 At this time General Robert E Lee decided not to fight Grant8 It should be noted that during these battles no Americans died9 Although it would take another year before Sherman reached Charleston9 On January 1st 1865, Confederate General Beauregard surrendered at Appomattox Court House10 As a result of these events1St Albans became one side in what became known as the “War for Northern Independence”2The town was looted by Union soldiers after they took control4After the war ended in 1865, many former slaves returned home2Because most white farmers abandoned Appalachia during Reconstruction period following Civil War3Many African Americans migrated downriver from Missouri or southern Indiana4Beginning in 1870s various small businesses opened up throughout downtown Saint Albans giving impetus for growth5In 1907 some homeowners built a large mansion on today’s Main Street called Pemberton Park6 Between 1910-1920 numerous stores opened up along Beverley Street7During World War II many local industries produced materials such as munitions8 During 1970s-1980s there was significant population movement with more than 30% increase in population1Today's downtown Saint Albans is full of shopping malls and other businesses2
The town of St. Albans in West Virginia was founded by the English in 1765 as a small outpost on the Cumberland River. The town quickly became a major center for trade and commerce, and its growth enabled it to become the capital of new Ohio County in 1807. In 1814, St. Albans was renamed Charleston because of the increasing population there. In 1865, after Confederate forces burned down the original courthouse and courthouse square, Charleston was renamed St. Albans again in honor of both the town's history and its new status as a capital city. over time, St. Albans experienced significant economic prosperity thanks to its location on the main route between Pittsburgh and Richmond, as well as its role as a hub for education and industry. However, during World War I (1918-1921), St. Albans was hit hard by enemy shelling that destroyed much of its infrastructure including many businesses and homes; this left it struggling to remain solvent until the war ended four years later. following World War II (1945-1951), St. Albans experienced an impressive resurgence with strong investment from government agencies such asthe Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) which helped jumpstart local economy initiatives such as job training and marketing campaigns targeting newly relocated displaced Americans who had fled postwar Europe or Asia during The Cold War era
