Parkersburg is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The town is named after General Ulysses S. Grant and was founded on November 3, 1864, by Colonel George W. Parker. In 1863, General Grant had served as military governor of West Virginia and he decided to move the seat of government from Wheeling to Parkersburg so that it could be closer to his political base in Kentucky. The first post office in Parkersburg opened on February 2, 1865. The town grew quickly due to its strategic location near both Ohio State University and the Monongahela River Valley Railroad for transportation and its mineral resources such as coal, iron ore, uranium and gold. It became an important center for coal mining with two mines operating until 1911 and two more starting in 1916. The industry declined during World War II but has since recommenced with some new production plants built in recent years. Parkersburg also has a large manufacturing sector including paper products, plastics and electronic equipment; among others it is home to several heavy industrial parks which have helpedto revive the economy since the late 1990s when general Motors closed its longtime plant here.] In recent decades Parkersburg has been known for its annual Arts Festival which features events like fashion shows, music concerts and art exhibits throughout October]

The first white person to live in the area now known as Parkersburg was John Armstrong, who settled in 1768. The town was founded on December 12, 1817 by General James Fayette and his army during the War of 1812. It was named for George Washington, who had helped defeat the British at Yorktown two years earlier. Parkersburg grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location at the confluence of several rivers and its position as a transportation hub for goods traveling between Pittsburgh and Virginia. In 1827, it became the capital of West Virginia. The city experienced significant growth from 1870 until 1925 when it lost its status as a capital after Charleston became the state's capital. In 1925, Parkersburg joined West Virginia University as one of six universities statewide incorporated under the newly created system of Higher Education legislation that provided government support for higher education institutions. The university has since grown into one of West Virginia's leading research institutions with over 100 faculty members and nearly 50 graduate programs across a variety of disciplines.
