Parkersburg is located in the U.S. state of West Virginia, and it is the county seat of Brooke County. The population was estimated to be 168,827 as of 2010. Parkersburg was founded on July 4, 1814 by Colonel James Kelleher and his family after they moved from Kentucky. The first post office in Parkersburg was established on July 6, 1814. In 1861, during the American Civil War,enslavement slavery led to a conflict between Union forces and Confederate sympathizers in Brooke County called "The Great Black Race Riot". The violence lasted for several days until April 1865 when Union troops arrived to put an end to it. From its establishment until 1960, Parkersburg was governed by a mayor-council form of government with a unicameral legislature made up of twenty members elected at-large for four year terms; however, this changed when Mayor John Cisneros was elected as governor in 2006 and became sole ruler of the municipality. As of 2010, Parksburg has two newspapers - The Daily Sentinel and The Republican - one radio station - WAVE 103FM - three television stations - WVTV (NBC)Channel 11, WSAZ (CBS)Channel 12 & CW affiliate WCVB (NBC) Channel 9 - six banks - First National Bank & Trust Company; Fourteen high schools: Central High School; Burnett High School; Fordham High School; Jackson Falls High School; Keystone Heights High School; Lock Haven HS; Pocahontas Valley HS & Stroudsburg HS.; One college: Eastern West Virginia University which offers undergraduate degrees in business administration and engineering
In 1855, the community of Parkersburg was founded by James M. Parker and his wife. The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to the Ohio River, its fertile farmland, and its easy access to transportation. By 1860, Parkersburg had a population of 100 residents. In 1861, Confederate General Ulysses S. Grant captured Bankstown in North Carolina and burned it down as part of his campaign against the Confederacy. This event symbolized the end of Reconstruction in America and set off a period of economic instability that lasted until the end of World War II.
