Parkersburg is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 15,711 at the 2010 census. Parkersburg is the county seat of Orange County and the home of West Virginia State University. It is also the largest city in Orange County by population size. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Parkersburg were French traders and missionaries who arrived during the days of British control over North America. They called their new land "Macon" after Louis-Jacques de Montoya, 3rd Viscount Marquette, one of the Spanish explorers who explored and charted much of this area in 1607–1608. In 1792, when Ohio became part of the United States as part of its Northwest Territory, Parkersburg became part of Orange County. The first post office was established in 1814; it was moved to its present location on Main Street in 1865. At that time, only white men could vote because African Americans were not allowed to live within any US municipal limits at that time. In 1907 a group led by James Waugh Pillow founded a local manufacturer's company near which they had been living since 1881 while working as apprentices for Elisha Kane & Sons Paper factories located near Wheeling and Huntington both north of Evansville Junction (now West Virginia's capital). The company name was later changed to Mountaineer Paper Products Company Incorporated (later renamed Mountaineer Paper Products, Inc.) When Pillow died suddenly in 1917 his son Don took over management until his death two years later which left passed on management to his daughter Shirley Kapp Pillow who continued operations until her father's death in 1955 On July 1st 1957 Rockingham County formed from portions adjoining Orange County including all but central business district including downtown parkersburg and most residential areas east side Market street southward into unincorporated community parkerstown west side main street

Parkersburg is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,804 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kanawha County. The first settlers in what is now Parkersburg were two families who arrived on horseback from Maryland in 1814. They named their new community after General James K. Polk, then the US president and one of the founders of the United States of America. In 1828, a group of nine farmers founded a log cabin called Pleasant Valley on what is now Pennsylvania Avenue in downtown Parkersburg. They named their community for President Andrew Johnson because he had been running for office at that time and they thought he would be good for the town’s growth. In 1846, John Hance opened up his own general store in downtown Parkersburg which became an important part of town life and commerce for many years. He also served as mayor from 1858 to 1865 and 1870 to 1875. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded West Virginia along with General Grant during the American Civil War and burned most of Knoxville before withdrawing southward into Tennessee near Gastonia, North Carolina television station WTVD-TV). The damage done by Ewell’s forces was so extensive that it required weeks of recovery before Parkersburg could fully return to its normal business life. One result was that Knoxville lost much commercial trade that would have otherwise gone to nearby Richmond (CA) following Ewell’s victory over Union troops at Monacacy Springs outside Harrisonburg on April 12th–13th 1865 (the Battle Of Blackburne's Ford).
