Additionally, Martinsburg has been home to numerous professional sports teams such as football (Pittsburgh Steelers) and baseball (National Football League’s Pittsburgh Steelers) since its founding: both teams have their origins within nearby Morgantown.

In 1781, the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through Martinsburg on their way to the Missouri River. The town was founded in 1796 by John Martin as a post office on the Allegheny River. In 1814, it became a permanent settlement when the Ohio Company leased land from the Lewis and Clark Expedition for $5 per year. On July 12, 1819, Martinsburg was incorporated as a town under the name of “West Virginia” by General James Wilkinson. The first Postmaster of West Virginia was Wm. Hays. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Martinsburg sided with Confederate States of America and lost its charter as an independent town. It re-emerged as an important military base during World War II and has since been promoted as an educational center by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin.

The Martinsburg area was first settled by the Potomac River Indians in the early 17th century. The area was surveyed by George Washington in 1763 and named for him, John Martinsburg. In 1801, a post office was established at Martinsburg, and the name was changed to West Virginia in 1819. The population of Martinsburg increased rapidly during the late 19th century due to new mining and agricultural efforts in the area. The town was incorporated as a city in 1907 and became an important center of culture and politics in central West Virginia during the 20th century.
