The United States Naval Reserve has a long and proud history in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The city was once the home of the American Navy’s flagship ship, USS Constitution. She was the first ship of her class to serve in the United States Navy. The Lexington was named for Rear Admiral David M. Salter, Jr., who commanded the Lexington when it participated in Operation Neptune's Spear, which destroyed four German submarines off Labrador on July 20, 1944.
Martinsburg is a small town in West Virginia. It's located on the Ohio River, just east of Wheeling. The population was 4,848 at the 2010 census. Martinsburg is the county seat of Brooke County. The first European to settle in what is now Martinsburg was George Washington who founded a trading post there in 1777. The town was named for General James Martin who fought in the American Revolution and died at Yorktown Heights in 1781. In 1802, John Marshall built a sawmill here and this became one of the most important sites in early Martinsburg because it supplied logs to many coal mines nearby. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne burned down part of Martinsburg so he could build his military base south of town near where today's Union Station sits. The townspeople rebuilt and soon grew into an important center for trade and manufacturing with many businesses including a cotton gin, foundry, livery stable, bakery and several stores until Prohibition caused them all to close around 1920. Today only two buildings from those days remain: The Masonic Lodge (built 1868) and Reuben Hays' Store (built 1907). During World War II, Martinsburg played an important role as one of the key industrial centers in central West Virginia because its largest employer was Paper Manufacturers Trust which manufactured paper products such as ammunition and bombs for American troops fighting abroad. At its peak during World War II, Paper Manufacturers Trust employed more than 10,000 people across 60 factories across 15 states! After the war did however decline significantly due to technological advances which made production easier overseas instead of requiring local laborforces capable of sustaining high levels of productivity while also providing good quality jobs training young people for careers like engineering or technology etc., eventually leading to layoffs throughout much of centralWestVirginia during the late 20th century culminating with closure by P&MTrust itself in 2001 when rivals Kodak Photo & Electronics filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection following allegations that they were not able to meet falling sales quotas set by management).
