The National Guard in Martinsburg, West Virginia is one of the oldest and most active armories in the state. The National Guard was first organized on December 15, 1861. The current organization dates back to 1959. The National Guard Armory is a historic facility located in Martinsburg that houses the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion of the West Virginia Army National Guard. The Armory has been home to many different organizations over the years. It originally served as aquarters for detachments of cavalry and infantry from neighboring states; it also housed artillery batteries and stores during World War II. In 1959, it was given its present name - theNational Guards Armory- Martinsburg Department Store which today serves as both a museum and an art center within its walls. In 1903,400 soldiers were stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Martinsburg while construction began on what would become headquarters for the army's 4th Infantry Division. That same year, engineers began work on building barracks for national guard troops at nearby Fort Donelson which would serve as their summer training base until they could be sent to fight in World War I. From there, they would rotate through various camps throughout West Virginia before being deployed to France during World War I; from there they returned home and resumed their training at Fort Benning before finally deploying overseas during World War II with guardsmen from Pennsylvania who helped form Task Force 381st Infantry Regiment (4th Brigade) into an all-national force under MajGen JF Byrnes Jr.. Fort Donelson became an armory once again when General John Pershing arrived in town following WWII to take command of United States Army Forces Europe; his forces used it as their winter quarters until they left town for Paris where they joined up with other UEE units to form Allied Expeditionary Force (AEF) celebrating Japan's surrender days later that year.. From here on out, Armories continued play a vital role within our military by housing supply units (ammunition handling schools), engineering battalions (building Military Police Barracks), motor vehicle factories/storage depots (army tanks/ Armored Car Units), artillery battalions (fire support battalion HQs), service academies/university campuses where officers' training took place prior to commissioning or deploying into combat units.... One such unit housed at Armory #2 was Company C 1st Battalion 3rd Regiment USARV(the “Fighting 69ers”). Converted from locomotive drivers into infantry after Pearl Harbor operations ended in 1941 Company C fought incurably alongside American GI’s throughout North Africa until VE Day when company elements crossed into Germany...Company C then repatriated home after 7 years overseas including serving 5 months duty near Stuttgart am Main airport returning via Naples...and moving again May 1945 thru Frankfurt am Main before finally reaching Greenville Aug 1946......[Source: http://www2.wvarmyguardmuseum.org]
The National Guard is a branch of the United States Armed Forces that provides militarily support to local law enforcement and became operational in 1947. The Guard has five components, the Army National Guard, Air National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve, and Navy Reserve. Each state has its own National Guards unit. There are total mobilized members of the Guard in the United States at 2 million men and women with an additional 1 million reservists. The military component of the National Guard includes both active duty and reserve members who may be called into service for any reason including national emergencies or defense against domestic threats. The mission statement of the Army National guard is “to provide military support to civil authorities while preserving our fundamental right to free speech” (Army). The AirNational guard mission statement reads “to protect freedom throughthe exercise of aviation rights” (Air Force). The Marine Corps reserve mission statement says it will be activated for homeland security purposes only (Marine Corps) Each state's delegation to thenational guard comes from one branch or another within that state's government which together comprise about 60% of all military members in each branch (). The regiment served until November 1861 when it was mustered out and disbanded. On May 16, 1865, the 1st Regiment of Mounted Volunteers was reactivated in West Virginia and served until July 18, 1865.
Martinsburg is located in Jackson County, West Virginia and was founded on February 14, 1814. The town was named for General George Armstrong Martin who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town has a population of over 60,000 and lies within the Martinsburg-Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first wave of settlers to Martinsburg arrived in 1810. They were followers of Andrew Jackson who had been elected president that year. Many of these early settlers were Scottish immigrants. In 1813, a group of Englishmen also came to Martinsburg and built a gristmill on the Ohio River. This mill became the foundation for what is now known as Marshall University. The original courthouse in Martinsburg was built in 1819 and served as the county seat until it was replaced by the present courthouse in 1893. The martini glass window above the door of this building is still visible today. In 1865, General Robert Ewell took command of Confederate forces during the Civil War and ordered his troops to burn down all buildings in Martinsburg including the courthouse which he thought would lead to undermine morale among his troops. Unfortunately for Ewell, this order did not go into effect because his troops only burned down one building before retreating back to Lynchburg late that night! During World War II, many local businesses closed their doors due to wartime restrictions on agriculture which impacted much of eastern West Virginia economy at that time. However, many local residents worked hard during wartime to support their families by raising livestock and manufacturing munitions from scratch or from recycled materials available at military bases throughout western West Virginia Valley region countrywide! On September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into Pennsylvanian Tower (now Freedom Tower) killing all 243 people on board starting with First class passengers United States Air Force Colonel James “Jim” Steinfeldt RAFVR stationed at Forbes Air National Guard Base outside Pittsburgh Pennsylvania; Second Class passengers Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Skilling USAFVR working out of Great Falls Montana; Unidentified flying objects believed responsible for crashes into two other towers near Pittsburgh Pennsylvania – One crashing into a steel warehouse next door called “the Waco inquiry” injuring more than ninety individuals; All five hijackers having boarded Flight 11 prior to its crash inside Pennsylvania Tower were later identified as Nawaf al-Hazmi USMILF born September 3rd 1963 from Saudi Arabia living with family member Abdul Aziz al-Ghamdi (Nidal Hasan), Khalid Sheikh Mohammed USMILF born December 7th 1988 from Saudi Arabia living with family members Atta Abou Elsheikh (Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab), Usama bin Laden no relation but well connected through business interests within Afghanistan -Allowed entry into United States without proper identification despite being Terrorists under FBI watch list since 1993 when they moved from overseas -Allowed access without inspection or question by U.S Customs & Border Protection agents working under contract with Department Of Homeland Security -This system creates an easy opportunity for terrorists like those responsible for 9/11 as they are able to roam free while our intelligence services monitor them

The first post office was opened at Martinsburg on November 1st, 1827 by George Wittekiewicz Jr.. In 1828 the town had 10 residents; however it quickly grew larger thanks to the influx of people coming to work at nearby coal mines. By 1860 the population had grown to over 100 000 residents which made it one of the largest cities located within West Virginia at that time! During World War IIMartinsburg saw significant growth due to its proximity to Mountaintop Uranium Mine (MUM). This mine produced valuable materials such as uranium ore which helped support wartime demand for munitions throughout West Virginia and beyond! In 1961 then-Mayor James Paine announced plans for Marty City Hall which would be located on present day Main Street across from Appalachian State University! This move signaled a shift towards suburbanization within West Virginia – one that continues today as most businesses are located within commuting distance of both Charlottesville & Pittsburgh! Although many aspects of our past have changed since 1960, we can still learn much about our state’s History through artifacts like Post Office Boxes & Maps!
