The first coffee beans were roasted in the town of Martinsburg, West Virginia on October 20, 1795. The first coffee house in Martinsburg was called the Coffee House and Garden. In 1816, a man by the name of Willard bought the property that now houses the Marshall County Courthouse and started to roast coffee. He also sold coffee beans to local farmers. In 1827, John Witherspoon came to Martinsburg from eastern Kentucky and began roasting coffee commercially. By 1830, all of Martinsburg had its own grocery store with a large floor space for selling beans and other produce.
Martinsburg is located in James City County, West Virginia. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of James City County. The town was founded in 1814 and named for General Alexander Martin, a U.S. military officer who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a Colonel in the Union army. The first post office in Martinsburg was established on April 12, 1814, by Major John Gentry and Dr. William Laddis.[1] The original building still stands and is used as a library today. In 1840, the town incorporated as a village and became known as "Martinsburg." The name "Martin" originated from General Alexander Martin's service in Mexico during the war and his return to America after that campaign with his family; he changed his name to Martin to avoid confusion with General George Washington Carleton (1795-1865). In 1861, when Confederate forces occupied Martinsburg following the Battle of Antietam Creek, Ltadier General Sterling Price ordered all stores within one half mile of Harper's Ferry closed so that supplies could not be brought into or out of the city while troops were fighting nearby. This order caused great inconvenience to residents because it prevented them from buying food or goods needed for their homes during the siege. A petition calling for Price's recall was submitted to Governoreding James Buchanan but no action was taken until after Price's death at Appomattox Court House on April 14th 1865.[2] The discovery of gas hydrates near Martinsburg led to increased activity around this technology throughout West Virginia beginning inthe early 1960s; this led to new industrial development including several factories producing tools related to gas drilling and production equipment such as blowguns and hydraulic fracturing wellskins[3][4]. Today there are many small businesses which continue operations despite difficult economic times due to natural gas production alone making Martinsburg an attractive place foremployment.[5][6]

The center of town changed over time with many homes being built along Market Street downtown while other buildings were added around Recreation Field east of townline and near present day Interstate 64/Upper Valley Road south of town line (now Martinsburgh Boulevard). One such addition was a large brick building known today as Old Market House which served as both a local grocery store and post office until 1959 when it closed because OFWOW Communications moved their corporate headquarters to nearby Wheeling, WV instead In 1861, General Robert Ewell McClellan's army invaded West Virginia during Ulysses S Grant's Overland Campaign pushing northward across what is now Brooke County into Maryland Heights where he lost his life leading an attack against Union forces under George Armstrong Custer some 25 miles distant from Martinsburgh on July 12th 1861 just two days after becoming President pro tempore of West Virginia
