Martinsburg is a city in Jackson County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Creek word "mahtara" meaning "old trade goods." The first white person to live in Martinsburg was James Fenton in 1814. He traded with the indigenous people of the area and built a cabin on what is now State Street. A post office called Martinsburg was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1847, John Cushing founded an agricultural society here which became one of the largest cottonseed production societies east of the Mississippi River. In 1863, during the American Civil War, General Robert E. Lee's army passed through Martinsburg on its way to battle at Appomattox Court House. Confederate General Jubal Early captured and marched through town on March 9th 1865 before withdrawing to Lynchburg Junction north of Petersburg, Virginia. During World War II many military personnel were drafted or enlisted here including those who served as members of Patton's Third Army during Operation Market Garden; Patton's main offensive into Nazi-occupied Belgium (Operation Varsity). Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday was celebrated here on April 4th 1957 by suspending operations of all but two corporations (the local paper company and an insurance company) throughout Jackson County for three days so that citizens could show their support for King and his demand for equality within America After almost 50 years as a major port town on the Ohio River Valley flooring area vacated by industry development due to increased shipping costs elsewhere, Martinsburg began efforts to re-establish itself as an important transportation center with construction of a new downtown mall completed in 2006 which remains its primary economic engine today

Martinsburg is a small town in West Virginia, United States. It is the seat of Scott County. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1827 and named for General John Martin, who fought in the War of 1812. The first store in Martinsburg opened on Main Street in 1830. In 1835, a post office was established here and remained until 1865 when it moved to Greenbrierville. The first school open here was taught by Miss Jane Addison in 1836. A gristmill was built here in 1840 and remained operational until 1862 when it burned down. A frame courthouse began construction here on Main Street in 1861 but was not completed until 1870. The first pastor of Martinsburg Churchyard arrived here from Carthage, Tennessee on October 15, 1837 and preached the first sermon there on December 12th. In 1863 Confederate Major General James Longstreet's forces destroyed much of Martinsburg during their retreat from Gettysburg Battlefield following his successful attack against Union forces under Federal general Ulysses S Grant; this event became known as "theDestroyer Day". The school district that today servesMartinsburgwas organized April 1st, 1895 when Scott County Consolidated School District #1 came into existence having portions of both Hickory Valley School District #2 (northwest) and Logan County Consolidated School District #3 (southwest). At its peak enrollment, SCSD#1 had an area bounded by Gaylord Avenue to the north, Three Forks Road to the east/ southeast, US Route 219 to the south/southwest and Highfields Road to the west/ northwest which included all or portions of Aberdeen Heights Elementary School (now part of Parkland Middle), Clarks Ferry Elementary School (now part of Parkland Intermediate), Highland Heights Elementary School (now part of Parkland Secondary), Greenbrierville IntermediateHigh Schools(now part of Liberty Intermediate), Southside High Schools(now part of Liberty Secondary), White Hall High Schools(now parts Of Liberty Junior-Senior Highschools)and Westside High Schools(now parts Of Liberty Senior-Junior Highschools). With an enrollment over 20K students for grades 9-12 & Prekindergarten through 8th grade per year back then,[4] many people refer to SCSD#1 as "Scott Local" or "Martinsburg's Big Brothers."
