Martinsburg is a town in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Erie metropolitan area. The first European Settlement in what would become McDowell County was by John Fitzpatrick and his brothers who founded an outpost on the Monongahela River in 1786." By 1815 there were three settlements with a total population of 143: Martinsburg, Harrisonburg, and Winchester." In 1828," Martinsburg had a population of 527. "In 1830 Martinsburgh had a population of 1,811" In 1850-1851", the county seat was moved from Harrisonburg to Martinsburg because "the Townsite (of which present day Martinsburgh) lay within that [county] Limit". The first courthouse was built in 1840. In 1861-1862 WV State Legislature took place at Winchester under the new Constitution and did not return to Martinsburgh until 1865 when it moved back to Harrisonburg due to lack of space. Martinsburg was founded in 1821 by Daniel Boone and named after him. The first post office in the town was established on July 10, 1824. The area now known as Martinsburg saw heavy fighting during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Union General Ulysses S. Grant made his headquarters here from December 1861 to February 1865. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell destroyed many of Martinsburg's buildings including its courthouse and schoolhouse before withdrawing into Tennessee. In 1881, Martinsburg became part of the newly formed McDowell County when it was created from parts of Monongalia and Mingo counties. The city originally had a population of only 120 people but has since grown to over 10,000 residents today!
