The Martinsburg Coffee Company became a recognized leader in the industry and exported its coffee to many countries around the world. In 1968, the company merged with two other businesses to form the West Virginia Coffee Company, which remains an important player today in the industry.

The Dutch began growing coffee in Indonesia in the 18th century, and they eventually became very successful at it. They exported this delicious beverage all over the world, and they even started selling it directly to consumers in Holland! Eventually, Starbucks got involved with the java industry as well. They would roast their own coffee, source the best beans from around the world, and then grind them into a fine powder. Eventually, coffee became an important trade item for Mesoamericans and Africans who traveled through Central America and South America to find new lands to grow crops and sell goods back home. Coffee was also traded as tribute between empires in Asia and Africa. As demand for coffee grew throughout Europe, plantations were developed in Brazil, Indonesia, Argentina, Paraguay, and other regions around the world. The first commercially viable roasting process was developed in Sumatra by Dutch colonists in 1699. This process involved breaking down the bean kernel into its component parts which allowed for a more consistent flavor profile across different roasts.
Martinsburg, WV was founded in 1814 by General Robert E. Lee and is the oldest continuously operating town in West Virginia. The population of Martinsburg was estimated to be around 100,000 in 1860, but has since decreased to under 50,000 today. It is a small town with a large history that can be traced back to its early days as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The town was first settled by Germans who arrived during the 1800s. In 1814, General Robert E. Lee moved his forces from Yorktown to establish a new military encampment in what is now Martinsburg after successfully repelling an attack by Native Americans. The site of the current town was chosen because it had good soil and adequate water resources for crops and cattle farming. In 1860, when America became embroiled in the American Civil War, Martinsburg came into conflict with Confederate forces which resulted in several skirmishes and losses for both sides. By 1865, however, Confederate General Jubal Early had marched through Martinsburg without resistance and occupied it as his headquarters until he was killed at Appomattox Court House two months later. After Early's death, control of Martinsburg passed from Confederate hands to Union troops until it fell back into Rebel hands following the Battle of Gettysburg two years later. Following the war, many Germans who had fled across the Potomac River returned home and began settling in what is now Martinsburgh within sight of Richmond VA; they were joined by other English-speaking immigrants over time as well including Methodists and Baptists who sought religious freedom after UK’s conversion to Anglicanism centuries earlier. A post office was established at Martinsburgh on July 1st, 1827; its first mail carrier being John Hargrave who served until 1830 when James Garrick took over operations; he served until 1835 when Elijah Hicks took over operation due to Garrick’s untimely death just six weeks prior). During this time period brickmaking played an important role inmartingburgh's economy as many homes were built using bricks sourced from local quarries (the use of brick began during this time period because coal could not be transported very far). A brickyard operated out of what is now the courthouse before becoming operational fulltime only five years later (in 1849) under ownership of JnoSparrowsmith Sr.; Sparrowsmith ran it until his son John Tomsmith took over operations four years later becoming one of martingburgh's longest running business owners). One such business owner whose legacy will live on forever is Samuel Morse who started up Telegraph Hill Bronze Co., Incorporated here circa 1850 marketing bronze products made here while residing at 6th & Market Streets (& which still exists today) making him one notable pioneer associated with martingburgh dating back some 350+ years!
