Martinsburg, West Virginia is a town in Mingo County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The population was 11,539 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County and the largest city in Mingo County by population. The first permanent settler in what would become Martinsburg was George Washington Carver, who founded a farm there in 1881. He named it after his mentor and friend Andrew Johnson Carver, then United States Senator from Georgia. The town became an important rail center due to its location on the Kanawha River and its access to coal mines and other resources. In 1903, Mountaineer Coal Company opened a mine here, which remains one of the most significant mining operations in Martinsburg history. In 1865, General Robert Ewell decided to abandon Fort Sumter and move all Confederate forces out of Virginia for good, including many artillery pieces that had been brought over with him from Augusta, Georgia. However, he did not leave all those weapons behind; some were hidden within munitions trains that he took south to Northern Virginia while he retreated northward into Maryland before winter set in. Among these cannons was one that bore the name "Ewell's Battery," now part of Fort Carson National Monument near Denver Colorado In 1868–69 Union troops under Brigadier General John Atherton burned down a log cabin near present-day Martinsburg as part of an unsuccessful advance against Fort Donelson on November 12th 1868 during their Battle of Centralia Massacre campaign against Native Americans east ofpresent-day Martinsburg Atherton's forces followed up this attack with another burning raid on December 3rd 1868 known as Donelson's Raid (now called ATHERTON'S RAID). This event added notoriety and bad blood between United States troops and Native American nations which continues to this day
