The Huntington Navy Yard was founded in 1814 as the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Annex. In 1861, it became the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Annex, followed by the Newport News Navy Yard in 1917. The Huntington yards were national laboratories for development of naval artillery, torpedoes, mines, submarines, and other naval equipment during World War II. After the war, they were converted into commercial shipyards that still produce military ships today. The first U.S. battleship to be built at the Huntington yard was USS Constitution on October 17th , 1813. This ship represented a major advance in naval architecture because it featured a twin-hull design which made her much more resistant to damage from torpedo or shell fire. She would serve with distinction through both wars until she was decommissioned in 1865 after sustaining only 12 hits from Confederate torpedoes! In 1907, construction began on USS Admiring Eye (AV-1) which would become one of America’s most famous warships of World War I. The AV-1 was actually three ships: an upper hull designed as a training vessel for future admirals; an armored cruiser known as “the Witch”; and a pre-war supply ship known as HMCS Athabasca (ANCHORAGE). However, due to financial difficulty caused by Panama Canal Expansion Project costs and World War I hostilities abroad, all but HMS Athabasca were finished prior to their deployment during WWI! USS Preble (CVN-73) becameAmerica’s first guided missile cruiser when she reached commission on July 29th , 1958 with launch ceremonies from Lakehurst Naval Air Station located nearby! Her unique capabilities included launching Tomahawk Missiles from her superstructure! On November 5th , 1959 USS John F Kennedy passed within two miles of Cuba while hunting for Communist vessels off Guantanamo Bay Operation Range during what is now known as “Black Flag Day” – thus beginning America’s Cold War involvement with Cuba! After five years of operations patrols along Cuban coast this helped lead to Fidel Castro coming into power in Cuba !

The yard was used to build ships for the US Navy, as well as supply other vessels with parts and supplies. In 1941, the navyyard was transferred to the Department of Defense and has been inactive since then.
Huntington is a small town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. Huntington is part of the Wheeling-Charleston-Fayetteville metropolitan area. It is located on the banks of the Monongahela River, about 26 miles (41 km) south of Pittsburgh and 38 miles (61 km) north of Cleveland. The first Europeans to reach Huntington were traders from Maryland and Pennsylvania who founded a trading post there in 1724. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through the town during its retreat from Fort Donelson after an unsuccessful attack on that fort. The following year, General John Custer's cavalry unit took up position in what is now downtown Huntington while his main body marched through nearby Greensburg to cross the Monongahela River atpresent day Point State Park. In 1819–20, Commodore James Kapp sailed his brigantine "Albion" downriver from Philadelphia with 128 men to explore what lay beyond Point State Park. He anchored off present day Huntington around May 4 and began disembarking his men for exploring purposes on June 1; he had expected to find a route across the river to Kentucky or Tennessee but found only rich bottomlands suitable for fishing and open country for agriculture instead. The first steamboats arrived in Huntington in 1827 by way of Greenville before sailing downriver past present day Point State Park; these boats helped develop local transportation within town as well as bringing goods downstream from Pittsburgh and elsewhere along the river system. On December 12, 1850, when President Millard Fillmore signed legislation creating Wheeling County within West Virginia using land acquired from Allegheny County via purchase and donation, most of what today makes up Huntington was still unorganized territory encompassing much of what is nowPittsburgh Township including PointeState Park.) On March 10th 1861 during Confederate bombardment of Fort Donelson burning many buildings throughoutstown (now downtown), some residents abandoned their homes fleeing into woods near present day Northwestern Junior High School which would later become known asPointeStatePark). Many residents decided it would be safer not return home until events calmed down so they relocated back inside city limits where they could rebuild but some original settlers continued living outside city limits until 1865 when all incorporated into city limits trapping most original settlers within city boundaries.)
