The town was founded by Robert Huntington in 1814 as a post office on the Potomac River. In 1815, it became the county seat of Huntington County. In 1861, it became a part of WV when Chesterfield and all of Randolph counties were separated from West Virginia. The name change may have been due to an advertisement placed in a local newspaper in 1861 for land grants near Bristol, Pennsylvania which listed "Huntingdon" as one of the offers. In 1892, Huntingdon organized as a city and named its first mayor Willis Halsey. From 1902 until 1903, Mayor John Fenton served as acting mayor when Mayor Willis Halsey was unable to travel due to illness or injury. On December 5th 1903 Mayor Fenton was elected to his first term as mayor and he held that position until his death on December 3rd 1910. He is considered the founder of Huntington City Hall and also played an important role in developing downtown through fundraising efforts and promoting public transportation within the city limits
