Huntington is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling-Charleston, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on October 11, 1810 by John Huntington and his family, who named it after themselves. On December 2, 1820, the first courthouse in what is now Huntington was constructed. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the Monongahela River and its access to coal mines and timberlands. In 1828, Huntington became one of 12 rural towns in Mingo County created as a result of the Kentucky Compromise Act. In 1830s and 1840s tensions between white settlers and black slaves increased as production at early American coal mines declined; this led to violence between whites and slaves which often escalated into full-blown riots. A major slave rebellion occurred in 1849 when about 60 African Americans attempted to escape from their bondage in Valley Forge Coal Mine north of town. This event is commonly referred to as "the Monongahela Rebellion." After several months of fighting (during which many blacks were killed or captured), most of the slaves were successfully recaptured by local militia forces under Colonel Robert Ewell Jackson.. A new courthouse was built on Main Street in 1850; it served as the county seat until 1870 when Wheeling became the county seat again. The old courthouse was replaced with a new building on Broadway Avenue in 1912–13; it still serves as a cultural center for Huntingtonites today.. During World War II much activity took place within Huntington because many people living there worked for government agencies located elsewhere within America during that time period.. The final decline of economic activity began around 1980 although some businesses have continued operating through various incarnations including a grocery store/marketplace called Piggly Wiggly since 1984.. Today Huntington retains much vestige of its pioneer days including its small community atmosphere complete with friendly locals who will tell you all about their childhood memories while you wait your turn at the pump or Bicentennial parade stop next door - something that's hard to find anywhere else these days!
