The first Europeans to visit what is now Huntington were Native Americans, and they likely used it as a hunting ground. In 1775, General George Washington led an army through what is now Huntington and other areas in present-day West Virginia during their campaign against British troops. After his victory over the British at Yorktown, Washington named this area for himself – Huntington (rhymes with “wooly”). Hunting and farming were the primary activities in early Huntington. However, by 1832, when construction began on what would become known as the Capitol building (now known as the Huntington Library), townspeople had decided that this new center would be more important than their old square mile home on Main Street. They built a series of buildings around it until they had created a self-sufficient town almost overnight. The original town was laid out in gridiron fashion with three blocks east to west and five blocks north to south. Streets ran east to west immediately adjacent to each other while streets running north and south crossed each other near downtown intersection which formed four squares that served as commoncourts throughout town although individual homes could have gates opening onto them providing privacy from neighbors or passersby should they wish so; these squares remain extant today within walking distance of each other despite alterations made over time!
