The Navy has deployed gift history to Fairmont, West Virginia for over 50 years. The deployment of the USS Constitution (1802) and USS Constitution Museum (1907) brought gifts from around the globe to the town of Fairmont. The Town Council voted in 1957 to install a Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at Fairmont High School in order to provide training for future naval officers. This tradition continued when thetowns merged withFairmont County in 2000 and Naval Reserve Lt. Col. John Aiken became Superintendent of Schools. Today, Gifts from the Sea continues to play an important role in the history of Naval Reserve Officer's Training Corps deployments in Fairmount County. In commemoration of our service members who have given their lives while serving our country, we are proud to host several different events annually that celebrate their legacy and culture within our community. These events include Sailors' Day on April 15th, Fleet Week on July 4th-6th and Veteran's Day on October 11th-13th each year!

Navy deployed gift history in Fairmont, West Virginia begins with Commodore James A. Bayly's ship the USS Constitution (1795-1865) on December 8, 1895. The USS Constitution was a frigate and was commanded by Commodore Bayly when she visited Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to pick up new gunnery equipment for use during the Spanish-American War. The USS Constitution also donated four cannons to the town of Fairmont in 1898. On October 10, 1916, the USS Constellation (CVA-8) delivered 5,000 books to Fairmont as part of United States Library Service's Great American Book Drive. In 1946, the town of Fairmont dedicated a plaque to honor Commodore Bayly and his crew of the USS Constitution who served in World War II.

The town was founded on a tract of land that had been given to them by the Virginia Assembly. In 1824, Fairmont became the capital of West Virginia. The town has two hospitals, three schools, and five businesses including an iron works and a paper mill. Fairmont is home to many cultural events such as Shakespeare productions and opera performances.

Today, the Navy remains dedicated to its mission of deterrence by providing quality military equipment that is used by our Allies and friends around the world. The generosity of sailors across all fleets continues to make a difference in both World Wars I (1914-18)and II (1941-1945).
