Fairmont is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 7,021 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Richmond, WV–OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fairmont is on the Ohio River and forms part of the Wheeling–Richmond Corridor corridor. The town was founded in 1825 by Colonel John Fairmont and named for him. The first post office in Fairmont opened in 1827. The present post office located just off U.S. Route 1 west of the current town limits was established in 1912 and has been open ever since. The community's name comes from Colonel John Fairmount who organized and built the original courthouse here in 1825-26 as part of then-West Virginia's first judicial system which also included Kanawha County as one of its five circuit courts; he had earlier come to Kanawha County from Maryland as an officer with troops under General Andrew Johnson during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The choice was made because of its strategic location at the junction of two important east-west trails. In addition, Fairmont had a large population due to its position near the then-thriving coal mining industry. The original capitol building was constructed in 1824 and originally served as the home of the General Assembly. It was replaced by a more elaborate structure in 1836 which served as both the statehouse and government hospital. The legislature moved from Richmond to Fairmont in 1863 following Confederate victory over Union forces during the American Civil War. After Reconstruction ended in 1865,Fairmont served as the seat of West Virginia’s unicameral executive branch until 1938 when it became part of the newly created Appalachian State University system. After that time,Fairmountian politics were focused on maintaining close ties with neighboring states while developing its own economy and infrastructure. Today, Fairmount is one of West Virginia’s most popular tourist destinations thanks to its history, culture and natural beauty. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture and attractions dating back to pre-settlement times.
