Fairmont is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,561 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling-Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Fairmont was John Gregg, who arrived in 1784. Gregg's land lay on the eastern bank of the Kanawha River, and he named his new settlement for George Washington, who had come as commander of American forces during the French and Indian War. In 1819, Greggs grandson, James W. Gregg, donated 320 acres (128 hectares) to West Virginia University; it became Fairmont State University in 1902. In 1873–74 Aiken County became one of four counties within Wheeling-Erie Township; Fairmont residents voted to join the township on November 3 that year. The townships were abolished by an act of Congress on March 1, 1907; their lands were combined with those of other Wheeling-Erie municipalities intoFairmont Township proper under that act. On July 1, 1907, all but two blocks (of ) of North Main Street in Fairmont were destroyed when a fire swept through the community while firefighters fought it; restoration began soon afterwards and finished just before Christmas 2007

The Fairmont became a research center for the university and continued to be an important tourist destination until 1993 when it closed its doors following a fire that destroyed much of its structure.
