Fairmont, West Virginia is a small town in Mingo County, West Virginia. The population was 1,046 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County and home to Fairmont Elementary School and Fairmont Middle School. Prior to its incorporation as a town on November 3, 1887, it was called "Fayetteville." The first settler in what is now Fairmont was Daniel Boone. He made his home thereabouts in 1786. In 1819, John Crouch built the first house in what is now Fairmont and also the first schoolhouse in what is now Fairmount. In 1828, James Witherspoon settled on land just east of present day Fairmount and erected a log cabin which still stands today known as Witherspoon's Cabin. There were several other early settlers until around 1860 when white men began to move into this area from neighboring counties such as Mingo and Monongalia because of increasing gold mining opportunities hereabouts. In 1861, David Pemberton bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land adjoining that of future fairmount for $4 per acre from Alex Bledsoe who had purchased it from Edward Donelson two years earlier for $2 per acre less than prime real estate prices at that time within the then-new Town of Fairfax Station boundaries which extended eastward to Sangamon County line then northward along Side Road thence northwest along Main Street to its intersection with Indian Creek where it terminated atFOLLOWING THE INDEPENDENCE OF MINGO COUNTY BY ORDER OF THE COUNTY COURT On November 3rd 1887Fairmount became a town underWest Virginia Gov't Act 2nd February 1888 The original townsite located near present day corner of Main Street & Indian creek included parts or all of present day Fayetteville (later renamed Fairmount), Beloved Springs ( later renamed Dunbar), White Sands (later renamed Mount Sterling), Black Mesa ( later renamed Eagleville ),present day Springdale .
