The coffee industry in Fairmont, West Virginia dates back to the 1800s. The first coffee beans were grown on the farm of Nicholas Roebling in 1814. In 1825, Dr. John Pemberton began roasted coffee beans at his plantation on what is now known as Broad Street. By 1830, Fairmont had become a major center for the production of coffee and became an important trade town in the region. In 1854, Mr. David Pease established a small roasting business on Main Street that continues to this day. Fairmont was one of the earliest towns in coal country and its forests provided ample acorns for roasting and brewing purposes. The early residents of Fairmont were primarily farmers who cultivated crops such as corn, tobacco, potatoes and cotton; however, by the late 1800s there was an increasing demand for roasted coffee due to increasing industrialization in Fairmont County. The first commercial roasters arrived in Fairmount during this time period with firms like Swenstedt Bros., Hendricks Bros., & Company and Jansen's Coffee House beginning to roast coffee commercially around 1900. In 1906, William Fenton purchased land adjacent to Broad Street where he proceeded to build what is now known as Fenton's Coffee House – one of the most iconic buildings in Fairmount history. This landmark served as both a business headquarters and retail store until it closed its doors in 1984 following Fenton's death years earlier. Over time, other businesses have occupied space inside or adjacent to Fenton's Coffee House including Bicknell's Cafeteria (1919-1983), Hair Salon (1963-1984), Pizza Hut (1979-1992), Game Room (1987-1993) and most notably from 1993 through 2004 – Ben Andres' Café which continued serving fresh roasted Columbian Coffee until it closed its doors following Ben Andres' untimely death in 2003 aged 73 years old! In recent years there has been an increase in interest within local communities surrounding Fairmount regarding developing new industries or expanding existing ones within our townspeople are passionate about their respective endeavors - this includes but is not limited to craft brewers such as Blue Ridge Brewery/Brewing Works LLC which has opened up shop next door to Hometown Brewing Company since 2013 (!), agricultural producers such as Brownstown Farms LLC which has focused their efforts towards growing produce onsite since 2014 (!), manufacturing companies such as Wernham’s Candy Company which relocated from Charleston SC after 43 years (!), along with several restaurants/bars opening up throughout downtown providing unique opportunities for patrons experiencing all thingsFairmountian!

This shop served as the base for early trade with neighboring Kentucky and Tennessee. 2) After years of effort by many individuals and organizations, including the United States Congress, Fairmountt became an industrial center during World War II thanks to its proximity to coal mines and military production plants. 3) During this time period, Fairmountt also experienced significant gentrification –namely that of its white residents into high-income neighborhoods adjacent to their black counterparts. However, much ofolder downtown remains largely unaffected by this changeover process. 4) Today,Fairmountt continues to serve as a historic community with a rich cultural history that is still enjoyed today by its residents and visitors alike
