Fairmont is a small town in Logan County, West Virginia. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling-based Greater Wheeling Community. Fairmont is located on the Ohio River and Route 219. The first people to live in what is now Fairmont were European settlers who arrived in 1776. They named their settlement "Farmsville," after the farms they saw on the riverbank. Over time, other families joined these pioneers and Fairmont grew into a small village with a population of just over 100 in 1880. During World War I, Fairmont became an important military base for America because it was close to munitions production sites on both sides of the river. The town also played an important role during World War II as one of several American communities that supplied food and materials to Uncle Sam's war effort. After the war, many residents moved away from Fairmounta to take advantage of local job opportunities and grow fruits and vegetables or start their own businesses. Today,Fairmounta remains a vibrant community with many residents active in its cultural life and volunteer work programs

Fairmont is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Erie, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fairmont was founded in 1809 as a trading post on the Potomac River by Captain John D'Urberville and his family. The town name means "happy valley" or "pleasant valley." The first settler in Fairmont was James Smith who arrived in 1809. He built a log cabin on what is now known as Main Street. early settlers also used an area now known as Park Avenue for their homes and Adobe Creek supplied water to their cedar huts. By 1814, Captain D'Urberville had organized a wagon train to trade goods with the Shawnee Indians when he discovered gold nuggets near Fairmont's junction with the Ohio River. This discovery led to increased traffic along the Potomac River which caused more development of Fairmont and its adjoining villages including Aldridge (now Wheeling), Liberty (now Parker) and Clarksburg. In 1820,Captain John Pemberton established Fort Pitt on rapids above Clarksburg where he could control access to downstream navigation on the Upper Potomac River without fear of attack from Indian tribes living upstream or raids by frontier marauders during winter months when resources were low and travel difficult. In 1830-31 General Robert Ewing visited Fort Pitt while surveys were being made for an overland route from Philadelphia through west Virginia to Baltimore via Cumberland Gap then Cincinnati through Kentucky and Indianapolis before arriving at Fort Pitt just south of Clarksburg about November 20th 1830 Later that year Colonel Edward Everett served as Military Governor of West Virginia Territory under Brigadier General George Washington duringquarantined portions of East Tennessee until February 8th 1781 when all Cherokee had been relocated westward into western South Carolina by order of General Alexander Hamilton under orders from Thomas Jefferson which included moving Cherokees eastward into what are now eastern Oklahoma
