The Fairmont Army Depot was established in 1892 as the Fairmont Arsenal. It served as a munitions depot and production center for the United States military during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. The depot closed in 1969, but it was reopened in 1984 as the Fairmont Army Ammunition Plant. Today, the plant serves as an ammunition storage and distribution facility for the US military. The first cannon to be stored at the arsenal were three New England Enfield rifles that were delivered by ship from Boston on December 8, 1892. The weapons were used against Native Americans in West Virginia during the Indian Wars of 1876-1877. In 1903, President Roosevelt ordered that all artillery batteries be dispersed throughout America so that they could be better defended against potential enemies at home and abroad. As a result of this order, cannons began being stored at arsenals throughout America instead of just Fort Sumter in South Carolina. In 1924, General Hugh Waddell became Commanding Officer of Fort Monmouth while stationed at Fort Knox outside Louisville Kentucky. He decided to open up a new armament manufacturing center withinFort Monmouth which would become known as “Waddell’s Arsenal” after him. This factory produced tanks and artillery pieces for both world wars; however, it also produced many items not related to warfare such as radios and bicycles. In 1938-1939, duringworld war ii Waddell moved his production operations from Fort Monmouth to Fayetteville Arkansas due to constant bombing raids on Philadelphia Pennsylvania by Germany which had caused great damage to property there including loss of life and destruction of businesses worth millions of dollars! In 1945 when Germany surrendered unconditionally after four years of warfare (the end of World War 2), American forces finally ended their occupation of Europe! Afterward Waddell’s Arsenal reverted back into an armaments storage facility once again under US control! Today, Fairmont Army Ammunition Plant is one of the largest arms factories in America with over 350 employees making gun barrels, rockets launchers, missiles etc….It is also home to several museums including “The Arsenal Museum” which tells its story about how munitions have been used over time both domestically and abroad………………………………………..
