The Clarksburg National Guard is a United States military force that was originally organized on November 15, 1861 as the West Virginia State Militia. The National Guard was created to provide defense of the state during the American Civil War. In 1864, the National Guard was made an acting branch of the U.S. Army and became known as the Eastern Reserve Infantry Regiment (ERIR). The regiment served in Tennessee and Kentucky during the war and then fought in New Mexico and Arizona before being federally recognized on July 4, 1867. The regiment lost its federal status in 1892 but regained it in 1898 when Washington ceded all of West Virginia to Great Britain as part of their Treaty of Paris following World War I. The national guard has been present in Clarksburg since September 9, 1889, when Confederate General John Bell Hood's army invaded West Virginia from Maryland while General Grant was fighting in Illinois. On September 16, 1889, Governor James Murchison ordered Colonel George Lunsford with a five-man force to establish a garrison at Clarksburg for protection against Hood's army. After a few months of operations, Lunsford's garrison numbered twenty men under Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Hargrave. In October 1890, Lunsford resigned his commission due to health reasons and Captain William Cranch took command of the unit. In 1893–94Captain Cranch led an expedition against Indian insurgents near Buckeye Creek Bridge located about four miles west of Clarksburg on Fluvanna County Road No 775E In 1897 Captain Cranch unsuccessfully attempted to raise 509th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment from scratch using local recruits after seeing their advertisement in Field & Stream magazine On May 25th 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102 which called for all states east of Mississippi into formation under one government with military discipline In 1912 both Lieutenant Colonel Edward Aherns (1st WV NGN) and Major Hiram Sibley were killed while serving with Company K 2nd Battalion Ohio Volunteers while guarding miners at Harrison Tunnel near Big Spring After World War I ended there was no immediate need for troops so Governor James Murchison approached Congress asking them to authorize creation of a state militia department within Interior Department Congress agreed but never followed through with creating such a department Water Resources Control Act authorizes appropriation fornational guard fund

The area that now comprises Clarksburg was settled by Welsh immigrants in the early 1800s. In 1814, United States troops burned down part of nearby Wheeling to prevent inhabitants from fleeing during the Burning of Wheeling Creek. After years of growth and development, Clarksburg reached its peak as an industrial center during World War II thanks to its heavy production of munitions and other war-related products. However, since then, local businesses have experienced significant decline due to competition from larger metropolitan areas in the region. The population of Clarksburg declined from over 60,000 in 2000 to 50,000 today. The history of Clarksburg begins with George Washington's arrival in 1792 on his Expedition against the Cherokee Nation. He named the community after himself, which is why it is known as "Washingtontown." Washingtontown served as a military post for many years before being abandoned in 1810 when General Anthony Wayne moved his army southward into Kentucky. For several years afterwards, Clarksburg lay fallow until it was purchased by Colonel John Forbes from Native American chiefs in 1814 for $5 per acre ($160 per hectare). At first glance, Forbes' purchase may seem insignificant given that there were no large tracts of land available for sale within miles of where he lived however his decision to build a mill at what would later become downtown Clarksburg represented an unprecedented investment for those days. Forbes' mill had two primary purposes: It produced flour for subsistence purposes and also provided employment for local residents who manufactured items such as hats and boots for soldiers stationed abroad. By 1830, almost allianted mills had been erected throughout Upper Tennessee Valley but only one—the Clermont Mill—had turned out flour comparable to that offered by George Washington's mill at Fort Lee near Philadelphia Pennsylvania (today's Lancaster). Unfortunately for Henry Clay Frick—the founder and CEO of DuPont Corporation—the market did not appreciate his efforts to enter this new industry; instead he concentrated on building railroadroads which led him into bankruptcy four years later (1851). effectively ending any hopeDuPont might have had at entering this important sector earlier than they did (Frick essentially built DuPont from scratch). 2)During World War II much factory output went out east because so much depended upon raw materials coming down through Canada 3)In 1951 Du Pont went bankrupt caused by poor decisions made about transportation
