Clarksburg is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 10,602 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kanawha County. Clarksburg was founded in 1792 by Colonel George Washington and his family as a whiskey distillery on the banks of the Potomac River. The Distillery District of Clarksburg was designated in 1802 and became a borough in 1825. The primary industry until 1865 was found to be agriculture, with small-scale production continuing until after World War II when large-scale enterprises began to take hold. Today, Clarksburg's economy relies largely upon tourism and its location within easy access to beautiful Mountaineering National Park and other attractions including coal mines and a smelter that produces aluminum cans for both domestic and export use. The first school in Clarksburg opened in 1821 on land donated by John Campbells tobacco merchant father James Campbell Sr.. In 1835, Northern Pike School became the first brick school house in what would become Clarksburg. A new brick courthouse replaced the original courthouse which burned down during an accidental fire in 1851. In 1860, Cumberland Presbyterian Church moved from its original site near Fayetteville to what is now the corner of Market Square Drive and Union Avenue where it continues to operate today as one of downtown Clarksburg's most important landmarks In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived at Fort Donelson while seeking refuge from army pursuit west of Memphis Tennessee; he requested land east of Harrison Street so that his remaining troops could build their own fortification rather than surrendering to Union forces under Grant which would have seen them delivered into slavery if captured On December 12th 1861 General Ulysses S Grant issued an order ordering all Confederate generals except Robert Ewell who had surrendered at Fort Donelson not to attempt any further attacks against Federal forces or property east of Harrison Street; this order effectively ended any hopes for continued resistance by Confederate commanders East of Memphis Tennessee
