However, World War I and World War II caused significant economic decline for Clarksburg. Today, it is a small city with a population of around 508 residents.
Clarksburg is the seat of Clifton County, West Virginia. It was founded in 1827 by members of the Methodist church and became a town in 1839. The post office was established in Clarksburg in 1841. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee spent his last night in Clarksburg before leaving for Maryland to fight against the Union army. The town was burned down by Union troops on April 12, 1865, as part of the Battle of Gettysburg.
