Clarksburg is a town in Logan County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,252 at the 2010 census. The Clarksburg–Fayetteville Micropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 18,611 as of 2013. Clarksburg is the home of West Virginia University and it has been the capital of West Virginia since 1781. The first Europeans to visit what is now Clarksburg were French traders in 1619 who named the area "Catherine Town". A man by the name of Claiborne called this settlement "Lenoir" in 1628; later it was changed to Clarksburg after General James Clark's forces burned Lenoir on October 20, 1781. In 1788, Congress passed an act creating Logan County and giving its land to George Washington for his use while he was being held as a prisoner at Valley Forge. After Washington's death in 1799, Jefferson became President and ordered that all public lands be returned to the states except for 1/4 mile (0.8 km) about Monticello which he had granted to Virginians John Tyler and James Kapplestadt for their home village near Charlottesville. In 1801, William Mifflin built the first log cabin in what is now Clarksburg when he engaged local Native American guides to help him build his millrace course around present-day Mount Vernon Road on Roanoke River just south ofpresent-day Lafayette Square. The first post office was established in Clarksburg on May 7, 1802 by Jno. Gibbs with Wm Wallis as deliveryman; Ulysses S Grant served as Postmaster from 1864 until his death in 1893. In 1830s many farmers turned out for sessions of the Virginia General Assembly at Greenbrier Ferry because they could not get representation from their counties due to political differences between New England Tory Republicans and Virginian Upper South Democrats known as Federalists or Jacksonians (which included some Tories). In 1861 Confederate troops under Brigadier General Pemberton marched into town during Shenandoah Valley Campaign under orders from Stonewall Jackson and burned most everything they found including government buildings including both county courthouse and jail within two hours after landing at Harper's Ferry upstream from town limits; only one building - a barn - escaped destruction. The Union army destroyed much more than just Harper's Ferry but also Battle Creek Bridge across Roanoke River before withdrawing back downriver towards Lynchburg early September 1861 after routing Confederate troops at Antietam Court House north of town Limits on July 11th that year; these actions helped ensure that no significant Confederate resistance remained throughout Richmond Territory until 1865 when Union armies finally captured Petersburg effective November 15th ending Civil War there seventy five days earlier than planned primarily due to advancing Union armies over open ground over time instead of using fortifications such as static lines along river banks like Army Corps had done previously

Clarksburg is one of the oldest towns in West Virginia and was founded by Welsh immigrants in 1786. The first store in Clarksburg was established by James Caldwell and his brother-in-law George Washington. In 1827, General John Custer's force encountered Indian forces near Clarksburg and skirmished resulting in four dead Indians and thirteen wounded soldiers from both sides. The battle helped spur westward settlement of Kanawha County and the town grew rapidly thereafter. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell made an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Potomac River into Union territory at Clarksburg Landing without orders from higher up. In 1907, Eastern Railway built a line through Clarksburg linking it with Wheeling on the north side of the river while also building a depot there for its trains carrying goods between Wheeling and points east including Elizabethtown (now Elizabeth City) on Roanoke River then called "The Iron Bridge" because so many iron ore mines were operating near Clarksburg thatTrainloads became wagons filled with rocks until they would stop on this bridge giving onlookers a perfect view before continuing their journeyAnother interesting development associated with this era was that large scale coal mining began about this time operations coming to an end around 1920 when more efficient methods were developed
