The first coffee shop in Clarksburg was founded in 1802 by Captain John C. Ligon and his family. The shop became known for its unique roasts and quality coffee. In 1903, Captain Ligon’s son, Major General John C. Ligon opened his own coffee shop on Main Street in Clarksburg. This coffee shop was known for its excellent roasts, stylish design and delicious coffee products. In the 1920s, Colonel Edward Hutton established an agricultural cooperative near Clarksburg that produced high-quality beans for local grocery stores around the area. In 1928, Colonel Hutton merged his agricultural cooperative with another group of farmers to form the National Coffee Company (NBC). NBC became one of the most successful commercial brewers of ground coffee in America during the late1920s and early 1930s. During this time, NBC enjoyed a monopoly on commercially produced ground coffees throughout much of Ohio and Kentucky. In 1933, NBC merged with two other commercial brewers – Brown & Williamson (B&W) and Roemer Bros.-to form World War II-era United States Coffee Corporation (USCO). USCO continued producing high-quality ground coffees during World War II as part of military production efforts; however, it lost its monopoly after war ended. Afterward, USCO struggled financially until it was sold to Jupiters Coffee Company in 1957. During the 1960s and 1970s, Clarkstown native Jameson Wertz worked at Jupiters Coffee Company; he is credited with developing modern roast methods at Jupiters which led to increased productivity at the company while maintaining superior quality standards across all their brands including Americano/Robusta/ Colombian/Quebracho/Pecan etc.. In 1980, Jameson Wertz retirement from Jupiters Coffee Company left behind a legacy of unparalleled roast technology at Jupiter's Coffees from start to finish - some still use this technology today! Jupiter's began production as a small creamery on Rt 2nd Street just outside town limits back in 1865 by Abram Paley Jr., father of Abram Paley Sr., who operated a general store within town limits where he sold groceries also
