Clarksburg is a small town in Allegheny County, West Virginia. The population was 3,869 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Allegheny County. Clarksburg was founded by Methodists on April 9, 1809 as a small farming community named for John Clarks and his family. The first post office in Clarksburg was established on December 5, 1810. The township of Clarksburg was organized on March 1, 1827 from portions of Monongalia Township and Westmoreland Township. On November 15, 1830, parts of Greene Township were added to Clarksburg. On February 17, 1836, the entire township became part of Kanawha County when it was created from parts of Monongalia and Westmoreland counties. In 1865–1866 the United States Congress passed an act entitled "An Act to Establish a Post Office at Clarksburg in Kanawha County", which created the present day post office at Clarksburg with headquarters at what is now Main Street (predecessor Green Road) in downtown. The new post office became operational on October 2, 1865 under then-Governor John Cranch's order following the passage of the Morrill Act (1863). As part of its promotional activities for hosting Super Bowl XXXVIII in 1998, PepsiCo sponsored a car showroom display located adjacent to Cloverleaf Mall that featured classic cars from throughout history including several original models used during Super Bowls IV through VIII played out on two stages: one outdoors and one indoors using Schneider Trophy racescar drivers from Great Britain; this event also included demonstrations by concessionaires about Pepsi products available for purchase inside the mall during halftime period while viewers watched live American football games shown on large projection screens within or adjacent to Cloverleaf Mall’s exterior walls.
