The city was founded in 1729 by refugees from the British Isles who had fled to the area following the American Revolution. At that time, Charleston was part of Virginia and was under English rule. During World War II, Charleston played an important role in military logistics because it was located at the crossroads between different theaters of war. The city also played host to meetings and ceremonies related to both Allied forces fighting against Nazi Germany and Axis forces occupying Europe. After the war ended, however, Charleston lost some keystadtians including many government officials as well as many businesses that had grown dependent on military contracts or financial support from Washington D.C.–a situation that beganto unravel following the recession brought about by technology advancements over traditional manufacturing processes (Kirkpatrick & Gorman). While post-war growth has returned some elements back into downtownCharleston (such as new bars/restaurants), overall there has been little real progress made since then when contrasted with other parts of America which have seen gains such as increased job opportunities for women and minorities along with more recent transit developments like MARTA (National African American Museum). Despite these challengesWest Virginian culture still enjoys strong popularity among residents across all demographics due largely to its unique blend of Appalachian values embodied by mayors such as Don Blankenship (former coal mine owner) who continue efforts towards creating jobs outside traditional industries while also promoting tourism industry;[1] university presidents like John Greenleaf Wharton;[2] author/historian Ernest Hemingway;[3] Governor Earl Ray Tomblin;[4] entrepreneur Dan Sexton,[5],[6],[7],[8][9]
