The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Charleston, West Virginia on December 6th, 1962 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. The gift was a bomber plane named "Eagle" and it served as a memorial to the men and women who lost their lives during that conflict. The plane was donated by General Electric Company and it arrived in Charleston on December 10th. It was parked at Joint Base Roanoke-Fort Bragg for the Christmas season. On January 4th, 1963, President John F Kennedy visited Joint Base Roanoke-Fort Bragg and he saw the plane. He remarked that it was an honor to have such a powerful symbol of American military might in our town. On October 8th, 1964, General Electric Company donated another bomber plane called "Puma". This aircraft also served as a memorial to those who lost their lives in World War II. The plane arrived at Joint Base Roanoke-Fort Bragg on October 11th and it was parked at the base until December 2nd when it was moved to its new home at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. The planes remained there until February 25th when they were transferred back to Joint Base Roanoke-Fort Bragg where they now serve as part of the Memorial Air Museum Collection.

During World War II, many businesses closed their doors due to shortages of food and materials; however, due toMayor Biddle's efforts several major munitions plants opened up and continued operating until they were closed by federal regulators in 1972. Many new businesses have since been established throughout downtown Charleston including restaurants such as Tim Horton's Coffee & Tea Place and Bulldog BBQ Pit; galleries such as One Artspace; and hotel/motel complexes like Marriott Marquis Hotel & Conference Center and Renaissance Management Companyleased units near brownfields sites across town redevelopment which has led to increased job opportunities for local workers throughout recent years Comprehensive plans are currently being developed for revitalization that would include demolition or reconstructionof most if not all remaining structures associated with original 19th century architecture while also adding contemporary amenities such as multi-level parking garage
