Bluefield is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 10,313 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Kanawha County and the largest in Mingo County. The two towns share a border, but Bluefield has more residents in Mingo County. The first permanent settler in what is now Bluefield was Nicholas Sprague in 1784. Sprague's land extended from present-day South Orange Avenue east to North Green Street and included today's eastern edge of the city of Bluefield. The settlement was made up of about 60 people who arrived by boat or train from Kingston on the Potomac River between November 15, 1784 and January 7, 1785. Bluefield developed as a small farming community with residences for farmers and their families until 1851 when gold discovery led to an influx of miners into what would become known as Mingo County. By 1860, there were over 1,000 settlers living in Bluefield and its environs; mining became an important economic factor in early twentieth century Bentonville and other nearby communities. In 1902, bluefields were added to Kanawha County as part of a merger which also created Mingo County; this coincided with increased development around Bentonville due to railroad construction through that area). In 1910, bluefields incorporated as a village under the name "New Town." That same year saw the opening of one of only two post offices west of Philadelphia – located just outside what is now downtown Bluefield – which served both villages until service was discontinued by USPS on July 1st 1969 because of budgetary constraints within then-new federal government structures. A major redevelopment project began during the late 1990s which included extensive rebuilding of buildings alongpresenting Elk Road (now USRoute 219) between East Market Street/Bluefields High School andSouth Orange Avenue/North Green Street; this project resulted in significant job growth for local businesses since it brought new housing developments adjacent to public transportation including bus stops serving both villages while also expanding existing shopping centers within each village boundaries..
