Bluefield, West Virginia is a town located in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The population was 12,622 at the 2010 census. It is the only city in Kanawha County and the county seat of Kanawha County. The town was founded in 1814 by General John Custer and his men as they were traveling through what is now Kanawha County on their way to fight with the Indian tribe of Cheyenne and Arapaho. The name "Bluefield" comes from a blue sky that can be seen during winter days when the sun shines brightly down on the ground. The first settler in Bluefield was George Washington Carver who settled there in 1827. He platted what is now Bluefield village on land he had acquired from Lord Botetourt after he helped with an expedition against Native Americans. In 1850, General Ulysses S. Grant came to Bluefield and stayed for two months before leaving for his campaign against Confederate forces in Shenandoah Valley. On July 24, 1851, General Grant arrived at Bluefield after four days journey by horseback and rode into town to give a public dedication of new Fort Sumter which he had just finished construction at nearby Cedar Mountain barracks complex. The development of transportation gave people easy access to goods and services outside of their local area which led to businesses opening up all over Northeast Kentucky and Appalachia during the late 1800s until people began moving away from small towns due to joblessness or simply because they could no longer keep up with technological advances like railways or automobiles. However, even today there are many residents who call themselves "Bluefields." With its central location within Kanawha County and easy access to both shopping malls nearby as well as highways that take you anywhere you want to go, Bluefield remains one of the most vibrant communities in Northeast Kentucky today despite facing challenges like increasing competition from larger cities such as Louisville/Jeffersonville and Lexington/Fayetteville along with falling property values due to numerous retirements throughout East Tennessee since 2000-2010 while also experiencing increased crime rates overall across all US states since then!
Bluefield was founded in 1803 by Welshmen. The town was named for blue sky, since the first field of corn was irrigated with water brought over from the Susquehanna River. In 1824, Bluefield became one of the two towns in Mingo County, WV, created as a result of the Organic Act passed by Congress. The act provided for the creation of counties in West Virginia and Kentucky along lines that paralleled those of Ohio and Indiana. In 1828, Bluefield designated itself as the county seat of Mingo County. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Bluefield was located on Cumberland Gap near Harpers Ferry between Maryland and Virginia. Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union forces at this location on April 12th, 1861. Nine days later Union General Ulysses S. Grant destroyed Confederate cavalry camps at nearby Winchester Junction after an all-day battle that began at 6 A.M., March 31st 1861
