Grant's forces at Harpers Ferry while he was commander of a brigade under General Andrew Jackson in what became known as the Battle of Harpers Ferry; it was one of the few engagements where Jackson engaged Union troops head-on and achieved distinction (the others being Bull Run). The battle helped solidify Jackson's reputation as a general able to fight effectively against numerically superior opponents. Bluefield is a small town in West Virginia. The population was 7,692 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County and home to Bluefield High School and the Bluefield Regional Airport. The town was founded in 1811 by settlers from Baltimore, Maryland as an agricultural community known as "Butterfly Creek." The name derived from the fact that many of the early residents were farmers who raised butterflies for their own consumption. In 1874, a group of businessmen led by J.W. Dolan bought land in what is now Bluefield and started to develop it into a commercial center with a railroad station and stores. By 1911, when its boundaries were revised, Bluefield had become one of West Virginia's largest cities with over 50 businesses including banks, meat markets, hotels, cigar stores and several churches. In 1928, when Yellow Springs became the state capital and Bluefields boundaries expanded eastward to include that town, it became the second-largest city in West Virginia after Charleston (then known as Wheeling). After Reconstruction ended in1877,Bluefield struggled to maintain its status as an agricultural center until after World War I when it began to experience rapid industrial growth thanks to new technology brought over from Europe.
