Bluefield is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,639 at the 2010 census. Bluefield was founded in 1802 by Col. John Sevier and his wife Susannah as a small log cabin community on the Monongahela River. It became an important commercial and military center during the American Revolution and after the war, becoming one of the most prosperous towns in America. In 1873, Bluefield became the capital of Mingo County; it remained that way until its incorporation into West Virginia as a borough in 1907. The post office remains open today and is considered to be one of the oldest remaining U.S. postal services outside of Washington D.C.. The name "Bluefield" comes from Old English blōc (meaning "bright") andfeld (meaning "settlement"). The first settler in what is now Bluefield was Capt John Sevier who arrived there with his family in 1802 from England & settled near present day Russelltown on July 24th.(1) At that time most of this area lay between what are now Mingo Junction Road east to west and US 27 north to south.) Over time many other settlers followed including Rev William Lewis who purchased 640 acres(2) just west of present day Bluefield from Captain Sevier for $610.(3) Lewis established himself as a preacher within this virgin land & preached to Native American tribes living around here before finally coming East to form part of Presbyterianism’s original outposts along Pennsylvania Avenue NW cornering Main Street W which he situated right next door to where we stand today.) By 1824 over 2200 people lived here making it then one of “the two great seats” west of Philadelphia& (& since timeline takes precedence so folks back then would have no idea about current place names etc…) Today local businesses control much or all commerce going on within easy walking distance while public education offers basic courses through high school diploma levels both morning & afternoon sessions daily thru college degrees up thru doctorates if desired !!! !!!

In 1813, Bluefield became the capital of Southwestern Virginia. In 1861, the Union army attacked and destroyed Confederate forces at Second Manassas Junction, cutting off Confederate access to the Shenandoah River. This event helped make Bluefield one of the most significant cities in southwestern Virginia. From 1865 until its establishment as an independent state in 1974, Bluefield served as the capital of West Virginia.
