In Bluefield, West Virginia, the United States Army deploys gifts to military members and their families every year.
Bluefield is a small town in McDowell County, West Virginia. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McDowell County. Bluefield is located on the lower Bluefield River and near its confluence with the Kanawha River. Bluefield was founded by English colonists in 1779 as a trading post on the upper Big Branch River. The first settler, John Green, arrived in 1780 and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1803, John Witherspoon established a school in what is now Parkview Elementary School. A Presbyterian church was organized in 1814 and named after Reverend James Moncrief. In 1829, General John Custer's cavalry brigade stopped at Bluefield while marching through McDowell County to hostile Indians northwest of Winchester. General Custer's men erected fortifications around Bluefield and burned most of it December 25,1829 during their winter encampment west of Winchester. The town developed rapidly after it became an important transportation hub for pioneers moving eastward across the Ohio Valley during the early 1800s. By 1830, Bluefield had two hotels and several stores; also available were three sawmills and four grist mills that processed wheat into flour and other products output from nearby farms such as Hickory Grove (now Hickory Mills), Edwardsville (later known as Elizabethtown) and New Market (now part of Morgantown). By 1840, there were five churches in Blue field with more than 10 ministers serving; seven schools graded primary-to-secondary students; twenty-four businesses conducted trade or services including eleven restaurants; ninety-six housing units with seventy-five residents total lived within one kilometer of downtown bluefield by 1860; one hundred fifty vehicles registered with nine producing over one thousand horsepower each produced goods for all grades within one mile radius

Bluefield is a small town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. Bluefield is the county seat of Blair County. It is part of the Roanoke, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler to arrive in what would become Bluefield was Samuel Wilson in 1792. He and his family built a log cabin on the present site of Bluefield Creek which they named "Wenham". In 1802, John Witherspoon sold land to James Blair for $5 per acre. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson set up camp nearpresent-day Bluefield and ordered all men to leave their homes until he had determined who was rightful owner of the land. As no one claimed it or returned after Jackson's absence, he ordered all settlers back into their homes by midnight that night. It wasn't until 1830 when John Smedley erected a sawmill on the creek where he now lives that bluefields began to be developed as far as trade with other communities was concerned. A flour mill was also erected soon thereafter but burned down in 1835 because of bad weather conditions; however, this mill did help start bluefields' post office movement as mail started arriving from Staunton and Charlottesville more frequently than ever before. In 1840s another mill was built on current day High Street by prominent local builder Jno.[sic] Anderson which did much good for commerce and helped revive old bluefields during its time of economic growth; however this mill too failed due to high labor costs associated with its size and production values relative to others at the time During Reconstruction following the Civil War, many white men from Appalachia moved down into what would become West Virginia looking for work opportunities while blacks were still restricted to areas such as Cincinnati and Charleston due to Jim Crow laws passed during that era
One of the most significant events in Bluefield's history is the Battle of Bluefield, fought on July 10, 1861. In this battle, Confederate General Robert E. Lee led a force against Union General John C. Fremont and his forces in what was known as the "Bloody Angle." The battle resulted in a Union victory and an opening up of the Appalachian Mountains to slavery; however, it also helped lead to secession from the United States and eventual war with Northern America.
