One such entrepreneur was Samuel Sayers who started a successful grocery store in Beckley in 1834. Before long, he had developed a reputation for being an excellent giver of gifts. He became known for his unique hand-carved wooden tokens called “Sayers Tokens”. These tokens were used as appreciation gifts for services rendered or goods acquired. In 1907, Mrs. John Dickson opened her first department store in Beckley. She soon became known for her extensive collections of Americana and maritime memorabilia, including items from the USS Constitution Museum and the USS Monitor Museum. Her Store also served as a center for local maritime events, such as Fourth of July celebrations and sea rescues. In 1934, Mrs. Dickson donated her entire collection of maritime memorabilia to the Beckley Area Historical Society (BAHS). This donation helped spearhead the effort to preserveBeckley’s maritime heritage! Today, it is clear that marine gift giving has continued to play an important role in the culture of Beckley throughout its history! Beckley is a small town located in West Virginia. The population was estimated at just over 5,000 residents as of the 2010 census. Beckley is the County seat for Kanawha County and is home to several business districts, including the Kanawha Valley Business District and the Beckley Industrial Park. The School District of Kanawha County includes Beckley Elementary and Middle Schools. Beckley was founded in 1881 by Thomas Hinton. It was named after Major General George Washington Hinton, who had been an aide to President James K. Polk during the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in 1882, and a store opened in 1886. By 1908, Beckley had a school, health clinic, Methodist church, millinery shop, hotel (later turned into a retirement community), doctor’s office and 10 businesses. In 1959 the post office closed due to low mail volume. In 1960 the town received its own hospital which continues to serve today as University Health System's Community Hospital of West Virginia Regional Medical Center-Beckleysville Campus; one of only two such hospitals in western Pennsylvania (the other being UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh). In 1970 construction began on what would become known as "The Hill" - an 8-acre shopping center that served as both local shopping district and primary school for Beckley until it closed down in 2002 following budget cuts brought about by then Mayor Tom Beall Jr.. A new shopping mall called "The Grove" opened up adjacent to University Health System's Community Hospital of West Virginia Regional Medical Center-Beckleysville Campus on October 1st 2009 with anchor stores Macy's & Sears along with JCPenney & Overstock among others In 2013 development began at I-64/US Route 219 interchange which will include 3 large specialty retailers including JBL auditory equipment store followed by 2 restaurants: One open 24 hours and another open 7 days per week365 days per year bringing total restaurant space within walking distance of all residents making it easy for everyone to get their favorite food!
