It is located in McDowell County and part of the Wheeling- Beckley-Charleston Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what became Beckley was John Beck who arrived in 1792. A post office called Beckley was established in 1824, and remained open until it closed in 1907. The townsite that now makes up much of the town began to be developed as a bedroom community for Wheeling during the early 20th century. The city of Wheeling and its suburbs annexed much of Beckley during the 1960s as part of an effort to bring more jobs to the area. By 1990, however, most of Beckleys residents had left for other parts of West Virginia or Washington D.C.. During World War II, local businesses produced munitions for the war effort; after the war ended, many those businesses went out of business and were replaced by new ones started by refugees from East Germany and other communist countries who had come to America looking for a better life than they could find back home. In fact, one such company that thrived after being acquired by Waco-based Sam’s Club was called "Volkswagen" because so many people who had come here during wartime found themselves unable to return home because their families were still under occupation by Nazi Germany...
