The United States Coast Guard was founded on 15 May 1790 as the United States Naval Militia to provide security for the American coast. The first U.S. Coast Guard officer was appointed in 1792. In 1805, a detachment of Marines were sent to patrol Hampton Roads, Virginia and they became known as the "Virginia Marines". In 1861, the US Congress created the National Defense Act and authorized the creation of a coastal guard force capable of repelling attack by Confederate forces on the American coastline. This force would be called the "National Defense Reserve Corps" and it would serve until 1940 when it was merged into the Department of Homeland Security. In 1951, the Beckley Coast Guard Station was renamed the Southeast Virginia Marine Police Station and it continued to serve as a central point for maritime security until its closure in 2006. Beckley, WV (2008) Beckley is a town in Webster County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Richmond metropolitan area. The town was named for James Beckley and laid out on a site where he had built his mills in 1817. The first post office in Beckley was established in 1827, and the name changed to Big Spring in 1848. The community grew rapidly after the opening of the railroad through Webster County in 1869. In 1907, a school merger led to the establishment of Big Spring High School as an all-girls school. In 1925, Beckley became home to one of two remaining small breweries in West Virginia—the other being Winchester Brewing Company—and it has been producing beer ever since. Today, most businesses locate within walking distance of each other within the limits of both Beckley and Wheeling. There are also several restaurants and bars located throughout town that offer great food options for locals and visitors alike.
