Yakima, Washington is a small town in the Puget Sound region of northwestern Washington. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on Yakima River, east of Mount Rainier National Park and west of Seattle. The first people to live in Yakima were the Duwamish and Suquamish Tribes. The area now known as Yakima was called "Heketa" by the Duwamish tribe. In 1851, George Vancouver explored what is now Yakima River and named it after his home town of Heketa, Georgia. The first post office in Yakima was established in 1852. In 1881, a group of American capitalists formed a company to develop land around the new city of Seattle. They named their company Sounders Land Company and purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) along the banks of the Yakima River from local tribes for $5 per acre ($6 at today's prices). This property became known as "Yakima". The company commenced construction on what would become its largest project - an irrigation canal that would connect Lake Union with parts of Puget Sound. Work began on the canal in1882 and it was completed in 1886. During World War II, many Japanese Americans were moved to Camp Miyazaki near Issaquah while others were interned at Topaz Lake near Olympia during 1942-1945; most were eventually released into Oregon or other states after 1945 but some remain living as citizens of Japan
Yakima was founded in 1853 by John Yakima and his brother, George. The town was named after Mount Rainier, which is located in what is now Yakima County. A year later, it also became home to the biggest local water storage plant in the area. By 1916, Yakima had a population of over 10,000 people and by 1924 it had reached 20,000 residents. The city annexed neighboring towns on two occasions between 1951 and 1957; these annexations left Yakima with an area of just under 60 square miles.
