The Yakima Coast Guard Station was established in 1907 and has been a vital part of the community since then. The Coast Guard has responded to numerous emergencies, including the devastating 1959 Columbia River flood, during which over 137 people were killed. In response to concerns about illegal immigration and drug smuggling on the coast, the Coast Guard began its own enforcement efforts in the 1970s. Today, the Coast Guard patrols more than 2,000 miles of coastline in Washington state and Oregon. Yakima is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Mount Adams National Park and the Yakima Valley Regional Airport. The name "Yakima" is derived from the word "yacoma," which means "little peak." The first people to live in Yakima were the Hidatsa Indians. The area now known as Yakima was part of what was then Rupert's Land. In 1851, George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and named what he saw as a high mountain range called Olympus Range after his friend, Sir Alexander Wilson. When Puget Sound was rediscovered by James Cook in 1792, he named it Columbia River because of its resemblance to Columbia Peak in British Columbia. In 1853, Solomon Grundy established a post office at milepost 24 on the present-day route of Interstate 5 near where today's Mount Adams National Park stands.
