The Yakima Army National Guard has been deployed in support of the United States for over 50 years. The unit first mobilized during World War II and served in Pacific Theater of Operations. In 1951, the Yakima National Guard was re-activated as a state militia and played a significant role in the civil rights movement. From 1965 to 1971, the Yakima National Guard participated in Operation Neptune's Spear which involved military operations against North Vietnam. In 1998, the Yakima National Guard took part in Operation Desert Storm which toppled Saddam Hussein's Hussein regime in Iraq. Since 2002, the Yakima National Guard has been providing security for events such as Oktoberfest and the Olympic Games in Seattle. In 1999, YNG partnered with Boeing to provide gift certificates to members of Congress since then they have given out over 1 million certificates. The certificate is good for any purchase at any store within 100 miles of Washington D.C.. Yakima is a small town located in the Yakima Valley of Washington. The population was 9,291 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Yakima County and home to most of the community's businesses and residents. The town is built on a peninsula which forms part of Puget Sound. The first Europeans to reach Yakima were emigrants from Sweden who arrived in 1692. They named their settlement after John Yakim, an early settler in what is now Spokane County. Several other groups followed Swedes to Yakima during the 18th century; one group led by Conrad Weiser established a trading post at present-day Mynydd Coch (Mt. Pleasant) in 1785. In 1856, when Congress created Yakima County, it included all of what are now southeastern Pierce and northwestern Thurston counties along with much of Whatcom and Skagit Counties west of the Cascade Mountains. One result of this expansion was that many people left their original homes to move to new ones – some 20% of the population growth between 1900 and 1910 came from newcomers living in Yakima County alone! By 1930, however, most people who had moved here had settled permanently – there were just under 3,000 residents still living in downtown Yukon by 1970! In 1942, during World War II, parts of Yakima were bombed by Japanese forces as part of an effort to damage naval shipping passing through Puget Sound en route from Vancouver Island to Japan; no civilian casualties resulted from this attack. Since then, development has been slow but steady – today’s downtown area contains over 100 businesses including several banks and two schools – making it oneOfthe most active areas outsideof Seattle or Tacoma proper! Many Yaksims have gone onto become leadersin their fields; three Nobel laureates have lived or worked in town: Larry Summers (economist), Bill Gates (Microsoft CEO)and Sheldon Adelson ( casino magnate). Additionally, many famous musicians have made visits here such as Paul McCartney and Neil Young; both venues continue host major shows each year!
