The Yakima Air Force Base is home to the 4th Wing, which is responsible for providing air support to area military forces. Fremont discovered gold in what is today Yakima Valley and founded a railroad here to exploit the Nuggets. The Gold Rush brought many new settlers to the region and led to increased development of the area around Olympia and Yakima City. By 1900, over 20% of all workers employed in Puget Sound were from the Yakama Nation.
