The United States Army was founded in 1775 after the American Revolution. The first U.S. Army Regiment was organized on December 15, 1775 at Fort Necessity in Westchester County, New York. The regiment fought in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and served as a part of Washington’s army throughout the war. In 1812, Congress authorized the creation of a corps of artillery for service in Cuba and Mexico. On September 20, 1812, General James K. Polk ordered the 1st U.S. Artillery to deploy to Cuba under command of Colonel John Biddle with orders to garrison important points along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and suppress any slave uprising there. After being deployed to Cuba for three months, Biddle reported that he found no evidence of insurrection or slave uprisings against Spanish authorities anywhere within Cuban territory; however some slaves did escape from their plantations and joined forces with rebel forces inside Spain’s territory (the Emancipation Proclamation). In 1865 General Order No 4595 became effective which directed all officers detailed for duty outside their homes without leave must take leave at once if they experience difficulty getting home on time or while absent without Leave; this order also exempted enlisted soldiers detaild for hardship duty The 1st Infantry Battalion (1862-1865) was redesignated as Company A 2nd Infantry Battalion (1866-1912), Company C 3rd Infantry Battalion (1913-present) and Company D 4th Infantry Battalion(1914-present). The Washington Army National Guard has a long and proud history in West Richland, Washington. The unit was first organized on July 1, 1907, when the town of West Richland became part of the newly formed state of Washington. The guardsmen were initially called the “Washburne Regiment” but were redesignated as the Infantry Regiment on November 1, 1912. On December 15, 1916, the regiment was again redesignated as battery (2) – 3rd Artillery in honor of Major General George Armstrong Custer who had died in battle two days prior. The regiment served during World War I and World War II with distinction both times. In 1947, the regiment was re-designated again as artillery battalion (3) – 4th Artillery. The battalion served in Korea before being returned home to West Richland on August 15, 1951. Today the battalion is known as Battery (1) – 5th Artillery and continues to provide support to our local military community.
West Richland is a small town in Washington state. The population was 906 at the 2000 census. It is located about 25 miles east of Seattle on Interstate 5 and about 40 miles west of Portland on Oregon Route 99. The name West Richland comes from the land that once belonged to the Mohawk tribe. The first people to live in what is now West Richland were the Haida people, who arrived in Searchlight Bay around 1792. In 1853, prospectors discovered gold near present-day West Richland and began looking for other mines. By 1870, there was a local mill built near present-day Main Street and Pacific Highway. In 1898, large quantities of coal were mined here, making West Richland one of the most important coal mining towns in America at that time. After World War II, however, production slowed as new technologies replaced older ones such as mining with open pit mines and water washing operations. In 1966, when I-5 was constructed through central Washington, West Richland became an important transportation center because it had access to both I-5 and Oregon Route 99 which connected Seattle with Portland. Today, however, I-5 remains the town's primary means of transportation while Oregon Route 99 becomes a largely scenic drive across hills and valleys between Puget Sound and WA wine country

West Richland, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what would become West Richland were two families who arrived in 1859 on the sailing ship "John Dory". They named their land Prairie View and built a cabin there. In 1861, when Territorial Governor David C. Boren issued an order for all men over 21 to mustered into military service in support of the Union cause during the American Civil War, many of these early settlers came to West Richland to join their brethren in arms. A few months after mustering out of service, they returned home and began farming their new land. In 1865, James Drummond erected a log cabin on what is now Highway 99 near present day Mountlake Terrace Elementary School as his homesteading farmstead known today. Drummond played an important role in early West Richland history as one of its first residents and later served as Mayor from 1907-1909 and 1916-1920; he also served as recorder from 1912-1914. Many other pioneer farmers followed Drummond's lead throughout this time period such as John Wills (1865), James Sneath (1867), Amos Sheppard (1868), Hiram Scott (1872), Hosea Stout (1875), George Herdtman (1876) and Elias Howe (1900). In 1905, when King County was organized under statehood following the 1906 federal Organic Act Amendments, Westrich won its own municipal incorporation with a population of 621 people! The newly formed municipality had six halls: one for each ward: common council president was Harry Laughlin; secretary was J P Healey; treasurer was Harry Wurster; clerk was Addie Fenton; justice of peace was Arthur Ransom; assessor was Frank Grimes gen’l assessor
In 1853, the West Richland post office was established on the site of present-day USPS headquarters in downtown Spokane. The original building,Capitol Hill Building #1, was used as a courthouse and jail from 1853 to 1865. Construction on Capitol Hill Building #2 began in 1865 and was completed in 1870. It served as the first government buildings in Spokane. In 1875, the Post Office Department moved to Capitol Hill Building #2 and it remained there until 1907 when it relocated to its current location at 5th & Main Streets. The building served as the Post Office Department’s administrative headquarters until 1959 when it became the Spokane Civic Center.
