Tumwater is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 20,535 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first European to visit Tumwater was Juan de Fuca in 1592 and it was not until 1790 that Europeans started to build permanent settlements on the west side of Lake Washington. In 1851 Tumwater became an incorporated town with a population of 10 people. In 1907, Tumwater annexed the adjacent unincorporated community of Goldendale and moved its municipal government from Goldendale to Tumwater. On July 1, 1912, all towns in King County were combined into one municipality with a single governing body called the Council of Governments (COG). In 1959, when Interstate 5 was built through central King County and added north-south streets near Tumwater Creek as well as east-west avenues nearby, developer Harvey Iverson proposed building a freeway just south of the creek bed. Opponents successfully lobbied for a referendum to be held to allow for development only along arterial roads rather than across open water lanes like Iverson wanted. The referendum passed with 56% against while 44% approved the freeway plan overall

Tumwater is a small town in the state of Washington, located in Wenatchee County. The population was 1,829 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Yakima metropolitan area. The first reference to Tumwater can be found in 1853 when it was called "Poulsbo". In 1861, Poulsbo became the seat of Wenatchee County and Tumwater became a post office with the same name. The community first developed into a farming community with Angus cattle and sheep being raised throughout most of the early years. In 1907, Tumwater incorporated as a municipality and began to build up its businesses. By 1924, there were five businesses in Tumwater with a total payroll of $1,500. Today there are over 20 businesses operating within the confines of Tumwater limits including restaurants, worship centers, medical clinics and more! The growth of his local economy has allowed for new schools to be built as well as an expansion into annexes on three occasions; 2001-2002-2003 which has increased enrollment by 10%. Additionally another annex was added in 2009 which doubled the size of campus allowing for future expansions! A new library opened its doors on October 1st 2006 making it one of only two privately funded libraries statewide! In addition to providing social services to residents as well as access to research tools for students, this library also boasts an exercise room/gym/auditorium that can accommodate up to 150 people! With such success stories from their prior library building (which closed after one year due to budget limitations), it is no wonder that they have been able to maintain such high standards since opening their doors!
The first permanent white settlement in Tumwater was by fur traders in 1847. The town was named for the waterway that ran through it, the Columbia River. In 1861, Tumwater was renamed Seattle after Chief Seattle of the Duwamish tribe.
